Civilisation ends with a shutdown of human concern.

A few weeks ago I read what I believe is the most important environmental book ever written. It is not Silent Spring, Small Is Beautiful or even Walden. It contains no graphs, no tables, no facts, figures, warnings, predictions or even arguments. Nor does it carry a single dreary sentence, which, sadly, distinguishes it from most environmental literature. It is a novel, first published a year ago, and it will change the way you see the world.

Cormac McCarthy's book The Road considers what would happen if the world lost its biosphere, and the only living creatures were humans, hunting for food among the dead wood and soot. Some years before the action begins, the protagonist hears the last birds passing over, "their half-muted crankings miles above where they circled the earth as senselessly as insects trooping the rim of a bowl". McCarthy makes no claim that this is likely to occur, but merely speculates about the consequences.

    universal apathy :-/

great article. now, this is just so preachy and sounds weird too but I have this need to write about some analogies I was thinking about. society is like a human being, a living thing, it has a brain and a behavior. let me explain. a human develops from a baby, incapable of doing anything until it is exposed to the environment and learns from interaction. it is very fragile and must be under constant attention because it's survival is at stake . the baby's brain with all these neurons and other living things competing for the correct connection, the baby tries to grab the ball but instead it hits it away. The right connection of brain cells for the baby to be able to grab that will come from repetition, from interaction with the environment. only by trial and error the brain cells can "see" what works for the purpose at hand, eating, running, whatever. all this is to some extent, in nature, very simple. the amount of brain information required for a mosquito to survive is very small, for some reason, humans must not only have a lot of that brain information to survive, but we also reason. so, we all talk, walk and interact with each other looking for the right connection, looking for what works for better good, we look for jobs in which we get paid well, in which we can also make a difference and improve society as a whole. all these processes that humans have are repeated over and over, generation after generation. very peculiar happens to be the fact that when it comes to only one human being, it only has one opportunity to be brought up properly, to be taught useful, productive, conscious, well intended behavior. once an adult, he/she has to use this new found reason to apply all this information. weird enough, this also applies to brain cells, as babies we all let go of a lot of brain connections that made no sense, when hungry, we learned that we should not hit the plate with our fist. Of course we were not doing that intentionally, it was the fact that our arms were not moving properly, we didn’t know how. As a society, we are just beginning to realize that we have only one chance to make a difference, to behave in a manner that works well, and in a society, well means for all and politics nowadays does not reflect this. If we are a social living organism we must act for common good, the same way our brain did when giving us the first chance to pick up food and put it in our mouths once we had tried so many times without success. only now, being very clear that we have affected earth in the worst possible manner, we know that either sooner or later, if we keep on behaving like this, we will not be around for that much longer. earth has been giving us food while we still keep on not only hitting, but kicking the table and screaming for some more sugary soda. mom won't be around forever, specially if we behave in the way we have been. we must learn to eat, we must make the proper brain connections, social connections, or we will not be able to survive. politics need to change for common good. we are only now starting to reason and we must apply this information that we have been given, this knowledge that we have gathered over time, as an international brain of some sort, a world wide human being. there are no more physical limits to society, we know, see and hear anything that happens anywhere in the world at any time. this opportunity that we now have to be able to reason as one human society only comes with the responsibility we all share to change our behavior for better good. there is a physical need coming from earth for us to reason properly and allow ourselves to survive. we all have the natural intention to survive. why r we, as a whole, still not doing enough, I do not know.
So that is it, catharsis is fun.
