An alternative to more oil, more coal, and more global warming

It is imperative to the lives of our children and their children that we take appropriate steps to slow the production of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

At the same time, we must slow the export of nearly a billion dollars a day to countries who seek to destabilize the world and openly espouse policies aimed at destroying our way of life.

Conversation, solar, wind, tidal, and geothermal power are essential paths we must follow to ultimately make our nation energy neutral and decrease the production of greenhouse gas.

Nuclear power is another path we must follow. The US has a significant reserve of raw material capable of serving as non-polluting fuel that will meet our electrical, industrial, and ultimately transportation needs.

Nuclear waste is a political issue, not a real technical issue. France and other countries reprocess consumed nuclear fuel to make more nuclear fuel. This can go on for many cycles - each cycle reducing the waste produced by reprocessing it to make fuel for more energy.

Prohibiting the reprocessing of nuclear fuel, a US policy for 30 or more years, is like prohibiting the reprocessing of aluminum. If reactors are located in clusters of four or more, their spent fuel can be reprocessed by an on-site plant safely - eliminating the terrorist risk associated with transporting spent fuel rods.

The US must adopt a plan to become energy neutral (export some, import some) while phasing out the consumption of coal, natural gas, and imported oil for the production of electricity. This is essential for foreign policy and absolutely essential for the preservation of our environment for future generations.

  • Captstu, thank you very much for this direct informed thesis which is the path to follow and the path which a great mayority of the world would start to look up on the US as the world leader it was during the industralization process of the last century.
The question is how to get poblic policy in place and do you mean conservation when you write conversation? If so I agree and think this could be the most significant way of action because it involves many individuals with high conscience and comitment to a greater good.
Great piece of writting and food for thought, thank you again.
  • very good..Im glad someone has a solution and not just stating the problem..yeah we can recycle..swtch out light bulbs..etc..but ultimatly we need to change our energy source on a global level..not just on country but all.
