Researchers in Finland are reporting successful use of an unlikely fertilizer for farm fields that is inexpensive, abundantly available, and undeniably organic -- human urine. Their report on use of urine to fertilize cabbage crops is scheduled for the Oct. 31 issue of ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

  • I have a couple of hippy granola friends who live in a field on the west coast of Ireland and use their own pee to fertilize their vegetable garden. It's good stuff apparently

  • We've been using it for years out of necessity and because it's really effective. Out of necessity because we can't afford what has to be bought. In China, they've been using both pee and cacapoopoo forever.

  • In Sweden,
they've geen doing this for decades, and new residential buildings have special toilets that separate urine from stools and the urine is collected for agricultural use.

  • there was a project in mexico city using organic material (leaves, grass, etc) and some soil + urine. the urine breaks down the organic material giving the plants nutrients while also building the soil. great for leafy veggies and great for building healthy soil where there isn't much.

i haven't tried this myself because i don't have the need, but if i ever find the need then i'll pee in the pot :)

  • If you pee in the pot directly, you'll likely kill the plant. You've got to dilute pee with lots of water.
