Pistol Cam Offers Police Gun Barrel View

Orange County, New York, Sheriffs and also cops with the nearby Newburgh Police Department plan to start field-testing PISTOL CAMS -- cameras mounted on the barrels of their guns. When an officer pulls the gun from its holster, the camera starts videotaping. Police are hoping the cameras will help either prove that shooting perps was justified, or help discipline officers that shoot unlawfully.

    I can't imagine that footage will be fun to watch.

    I wonder if they would consider adding the cams to tasers as well, given the amount of bad publicity surrounding tasings. This could either confirm the negative reaction, or could show the cops were justified. Really interesting.

  • I think it's a wonderful idea! And yes, I agree about the tasers, but tasers aren’t deadly nearly as often as Guns are, so starting with guns is good, but I hope they do move to other weapons used openly by the police forces everywhere.

    I'm usually pretty skeptical of law enforcement using cameras, but I think this has a lot of perks.

    There's a downside to all this too. What if the death tapes find their way onto YouTube (or Current) as things inevitably do? Not only is it gross, but then we're back to de facto public executions. I can't even stand to watch 'Cops', let alone a Gun cam.

  • I think this is an excellent idea. Many young men join the police force for the wrong reasons. It's a power trip for these boys. Having lived in the city, I know that there are many many bad cops who really think they're above the law. If we can, we should put cameras all over them. Furthermore, we should stop calling them police officers and start calling them civil servants so they will begin to better understand their duties. And one more thing, why do we dress them in black outfits and leather and make them look all bad and cool? That's really seductive and stupid. I think they should be made to wear pastels. Nobody will make fun of them, because they have a gun and a badge.

  • Hmmmm, a gun camera, huh? I like the idea. Damn right "Dirty Harries" should be held accountable, and now they can be. Besides, if a cop has truly been trained the way they should, then he should never need his gun, or his taser. Slap some cameras on both of 'em i say.

    PERFECT, PERFECT IDEA!!! Being From NewBurgh. I Think It Would Really Help Reduce The Whole "Dirty Harry" Syndrom That Plague So Many Communities. An Innocent Kid Was Not Too Long Ago Shot In The Back On Broadway By A Cop. His Family Still Mourns,But Those Crooked Cops Are Still Enjoying The SWEET Life Of Free Donuts.
