Here is footage of the surfers trying to stop the fisherman. Hayden is toward the end. Sadness.

More here.Check that copy, Peter. "...treated like anything else harvested from the sea" maybe. It looks like the dolphins are mainly used for pet food or fertilizer if a search on the internet is any indication.

More Horrible Video! There is a long intro to get through, but once the slaughter starts in this video you will feel sick!

This is aweful.

This is an outrage!!!!!! I have never been so disgusted in my life. What can be done?
-
If this revolting and unspeakable practice isn't ceased, I will never buy another japanese car as long as I live.
-
I'd just like to throw this out there. The notion of one animal is inherently more valuable than the next is illogical. A dolphin is an animal, a cow is an animal. I'm willing to bet 90% of you ate or is wearing something cow related. I'm not condoning these actions, just playing Devil's Advocate.

I can appreciate the rhetorical technique of playing devil's advocate. However, the argument that you are using is the same argument that the Japanese will use and it's just not so. There are inherent differences between dolphins and cows, just as there are inherent differences between dogs and chickens. Dolphins and whales have been proven to be intelligent animals with personalities and human characteristics. This puts a higher value on them than a cow. Furthermore, cows aren't in danger of becoming extinct!
-
It's all cultural. I'm sure there are quite a few practicing Hindus that would consider you barbaric for consuming any meat at all (assuming you are not a vegetarian)

I didn't eat dolphin today and neither should anybody else. dolphins are really cool and should be saved. cows shouldn't. a cow stares at the GROUND for 90% of its life eating grass. dolphins do much cooler stuff.

You can help out here http://www.savejapandolphins.org/takeAction.html just donate a couple bucks to our finned friends.

Cultural relativism is not enough to justify killing dolphins. That's not Awesome at all, that's stupidity.
P.S. Apologies to The Awesome, he was just trying to get the entire argument out there, and I respect that. This is just a subject that I am passionate about, and I think everyone should be. -
I appreciate your conviction, but no need for jabs at me. I'm just trying to see where you're coming from with a little rhetoric.

Oceans Without Dolphins? If dolphins are fish, then why is the slaughter kept secret? Dolphins are mammals. Their history is unique on this planet. They do not swim in personal revenge or judgment. I would encourage everyone who sees this and is affected by it to go to craniocean.com/dolphin.htm
One might discover they are not only about play, but have the capacity to impart deep healing to people.
Think of the wisest person you ever met, the one that made you feel fantastic down to your toes, think of the deepest healer you ever met, the good doctor. Think of the innocence of children. These are not "cows" or "fish." Kindly direct any "animal rights" energy in a constructive fashion here. This is a real emergency.
I would like to give a huge SHOUT OUT for the surfers. Yes, why not cut the nets? Why mess with the fish-mongers? The dolphins discern and would not have you endangering yourselves. They would take the fall instead of you, for your own protection.
One has had an intuition about this horror recently. I hoped this wasn't really happening. Now, the footage. Perhaps this is a job for Earth First or GreenPeace, I would think, an Earth Group that can get behind the challenge of aggressive action of blocking it while staying out of personal danger. People who are suited for that. Perhaps a job for the extreme animal rights activists, but these are mammals. I'm not suggesting anything, just speculating off of mirimysweet's question.
What if dolphins, with their superior intelligence, somehow assist to maintain the harmony and balance of the oceans? Just a thought. Something else about dolphins, to bring it home. There are only three kinds of creatures that have sex for fun: people, rhesus monkey, and dolphins. (All others to procreate.)
Again, FYI, please go to craniocean.com/dolphin to learn and to open your eyes.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Thank you for your courage and love and foresight. When you connect with one dolphin, like you have, brave Surfers, you connect with the entire dolphin kingdom. You will be welcome by dolphins wherever you are on the Earth or Sea. Feel good about your efforts and intention. You did more than you can know. And try to forgive the fishermen, if you can. (This doesn't mean to let them walk all over you.)
Peace.-

it's sad!!!,
but someone should take the miami dolphins (0-7) to japan, they'll be doing us a favor. -
I guess I'm going to get flamed for this but here goes.
The important thing to note here is something most who look at this don't understand. From everything I've read the Japanese do not only slaughter these dolphins for food. They slaughter them because the dolphins compete for food. This I think is the most deplorable feature of this yearly practice, but it also separates this from an argument against being a carnivore.
If you pursue this argument about slaughter for food and protein, I don't think as an earlier poster does that cows are any less "valuable" than dolphins because some measure of "intelligence" deems it so, and that this somehow should disallow the consumption of one meat or another. That sounds a little bit insane as an argument, and forgive me, but it seems a little like what the Nazis said about the aryan race above others. But dolphins harvest other fish for their meals as well. Does that make them vicious and destructive as a population that we must coexist with in nature. One might ask why they aren't smart enough to see the error of their ways and eat Kelp? (Alan Watts has made the point that some Buddhist monks believe Plant matter feels pain)
It may be inhumane to slaughter dolphins without consuming them as food, but we do the same here to "thin" deer population that grows too quickly. Blaming an entire culture for one practice as some here and on other sites who threaten never to visit Japan or buy Japanese products have done is really suspect, and probably displays a gross lack of understanding on the issues.
The Japanese depend on their fish for most of their protein, and many have a strong belief that the dolphin, much like a coyote or fox, consumes part of their flock. Find me a farmer or Rancher in the States who would let a Fox eat their Chickens before they do and maybe you have a leg to stand on. I'm more interested in studying the issue and providing proof that either the dolphins don't threaten fisheries, and convincing Japanese policymakers to enforce a ban, than wallowing around with sentimental tirades about how bad the Japanese culture is when in the States we do the same stupid things. -
hey! theres another celeb who was there as well...isn't that kristen stewart behind hayden?
think soo.....
i dig her- thought she was great in Into The Wild and Land of Women.
It's good to know that people are getting behind this cause- people whose presence will result in cameras and attention for the issue... commercial whaling and the killing of dolphins is a heartbraking issue- but if we continue to bring attention and pressure upon the japanese government we will see change. -
Again, please go to craniocean.com/dolphin to learn more.
Dolphins were in the sea then went to land then went back to the sea over lots of years.
phukna, there is a vast difference between working one-on-one in therapeutic healing sessions and with a mackeral or catfish. It's a travesty. The fishermen in the video could kill the surfers BECAUSE they could kill the dolphins. We are talking about a very different "fish" here with a higher order of intell. There's nothing sentimental about it. Read "Touch the Ocean: The Power of Our Collective Emotions" & get back to me. Better yet, go for a dolphin swim! craniocean.wordpress.com. Find out for yourself.
AROC'S site is really excellent, if you are looking for something that you can do:
http://www.savejapandolphins.org/takeAction.html
BTW ucfay, if you kill a cow in Nepal, it's grounds for the death penalty.
Think about it for awhile.
To you they are fish, to others, Mammals, and Mammals of a higher order, even higher than ours.
(Jealous?)

heliarc, you're gonna have to reference that original thought.
Wiki says that the dolphin meat is used to feed zoo lions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiji%2C_Wakayama -
another example why we need to stop this slaughter!Pod of Bottlenose Dolphins Rescue Surfer
Surfer Todd Endris needed a miracle. The shark a monster great white that came out of nowhere had hit him three times, peeling the skin off his back and mauling his right leg to the bone.
Thats when a pod of bottlenose dolphins intervened, forming a protective ring around Endris, allowing him to get to shore, where quick first aid provided by a friend saved his life.
