- Gun Control (201)
It is a ridiculous argument that, "if guns are criminalized, then only criminals will have guns." While true by definition, the relevant point is that it will be much harder for manufacturers to make them available, harder for criminals to get them, and more likely usage illegal holders of guns will be put away before they use them. Therefore, gun violence/crime will dramatically reduce. If anyone doesn't think that's true, just look at the evidence in every other country in the world.
As for the "right" to own guns per the Constitution, it is very clear from the context of the 2nd Amendment that the purpose of "right" is to make available an on-demand, ad-hoc army. Of course, that has been irrelevant for a long time...we have a mature, stable government structure, overwhelmingly supported by the public (regardless of whatever administration is in office), with a professional military. THERE IS NO NEED FOR A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE RUNNING AROUND WITH ASSAULT WEAPONS FOR A "MILITIA"! Therefore, that part of the Constitution should be amended, just as many parts have been amended over time (remember folks, the Constitution is not written in stone). Give up the lame excuse, "It is my god-given right." It is simply not true.
The truth is, most gun owners want guns for personal reasons (not many of them beneficial to society). There is no logical reason for having them around outside of hunting (which doesn't require handguns and assault rifles). It is time to ban general ownership of guns intended for killing people.

The inevitable problem your point of view presents is that no matter how strict gun laws are, criminals will always be willing to break those laws, and thusly criminals will always be able to obtain and use guns. I agree handguns and assault rifles in general should be banned and/or strictly regulated. However, one has to realize that a gun is only as dangerous as the person wielding it. We need to educate the general public on gun safety and responsibility rather than ban them becuase thugs use them to kill. When a danger or threat occurs in society the worst thing we can do is ignore or ban it from the public. It comes down to a simple ultimatum: criminals will always have guns, so you either get shot, or defend yourself.

I advocate the ownership of guns, may it be handgun, assault rifles, hunting rifles, or shotguns! It's not about banning gun ownership, because every reason you give for the reason to ban them can also be countered. At 21 i will carry a handgun on me at all times, if i have to make a decision my life or someone elses....i'll use it, if not...you won't even know i have it. I currently own a bushmaster AR-15, along with 5 other rifles/shotguns that are more of what you would consider hunting guns. The ar-15 i have for practice, I'll most likely not hunt with it...cause i don't see myself going varmit hunting much, but it's fun to shoot - even if it's just at a paper target. I've grown up with guns, started shooting when i was 9 and learned everything i've ever needed in order to keep myself and everyone around me safe while shooting. Banning guns would be like banning alcohol, drinking and driving kills thousands? yearly, so ban drinking because if you can't drink...then you can't drink and drive! It's something that will never happen so you might as well drop the subject....your best bet would be to elect one of the democrats that is running for presidency and seeing that an assault rifle ban goes back into place, permanently instead of for 10 years. Most gun owners know this is gonna happen either way with a democrat in office, so be happy with what you get =~)
