Image...
Not to be outdone, Google is tackling on social networking to competing directly with the new Facebook-Microsoft alliance. It seems that user-driven media (e.g. Current) is going to be huge and established companies like Google and Microsoft are scrambling to gain a share.

A quick test of OpenSocial is proving less-than-impressive.

The Guadarian article is interesting. I think it showcases a vital misstep of Google in it's OpenSocial bet—people don't actually care about the universality of their apps.

I think the biggest reason why Facebook is so popular is because it ditched an open standard of allowing users to use HTML and JavaScript to alter their layouts and opted instead for a streamlined interface. Facebook's new application ability is limited so that aside from cluttering one's profile page, it doesn't alter the basic layout.

Having apps work across networks is not going to compel anyone to switch from Facebook to MySpace or Okrut. If there is an amazing new "must-have" application created on the OpenSocial, I am sure that a developer for Facebook can emulate it.

    We'll see what happens.
