Not sure where you're coming from. I agree that eavesdropping has negative conetations but what else can you call it? The government listens in on your landline and cellphone, they have access to your medical, financial and library records, they can look at the websites you visit, read your email, bug your home and even enter your house without ever telling you about it, all without a warrant making it a violation of US law. They are also pushing to spy on you with satilites. Maybe "illegal spying" is a better term because it much more comprehensive.
Please also keep in mind, that while they are demanding to know everything about you they refuse to let you know anything about them. They are without a doubt, the most secretive government in US history. None of this is done for our security, but for theirs.

If not eavesdropping, what would you propose instead? Spying? Invasion of privacy? I don't think there's a good, or even neutral, name you can put on it--just like it's hard to come up with a neutral term for totalitarianism or genocide. If the administration is willing to play word games by taking away our liberty with something called the "Patriot Act", I think it's fair to call eavesdropping by its proper name.
