  • This article says it allows free speech now ...
does that mean the ban was lifted? That was quick if that was the case.

  • i wonder if they will have to also release those imprisoned by article 301 to gain entry into the eu?
im just thankful that it's still the rare individual that loses their freedom for "free speech" here in america.

  • ya know...that whole Armenian thing really gets the turks panties in a bunch...
Turkey wants into the E.U. - but the french got a thing passed that says that no country can join the E.U. if the deny the existence of a genocide where one has taken place...
The Turkish government isn't going to do that anytime soon, because they refuse that what happened in Armenia was genocide - and technically, they have a very tiny foot to stand on. Genocide is the intentional (although some will argue unintentional as well) irradication of a race or culture...Where-as the Turks never intended to remove the Armenians from the face of the earth...It is true that the manner in which they relocated the Armenians was unjust, cruel, and inhumane - the total destruction of their people wasn't the goal. It's the same scenario as the Cherokee people here in the U.S.
They were removed from their lands by force because a new government wanted land to expand into. They were marched to uninhabited lands against their will in a cruel manner, and sadly, many died...
The average Turk these days doesn't really consider the Armenian thing genocide - just as the average American doesn't consider the Cherokee relocation genocide - they were both regrettable and terrible things, Yes....but not genocide.
So, it's a touchy thing - i understand - I have Armenian friends myself - its just...i don't think it's fair to condemn an entire people for the faults of their fathers (or in this case, grandfathers) - i know that i'd hate to be put on trial by the Cherokee nation for something my relatives may have done a hundred years ago...(well, some of my relatives WERE cherokee, now that i think about it - so i guess i put myself on trial)
I dunno - i guess i'm just tired of hearing about this thing being such a big controversy...i think it's time we all just forgive and forget and move on...
I DO feel that the Turkish government could issue a statement apologizing to the relatives who were effected by the troubles...but lets call a duck a duck...
