WASHINGTON -- Jerry Yang, the chief executive of Yahoo Inc., apologized to the families of jailed Chinese dissidents at a congressional hearing examining the Internet company's cooperation with Chinese authorities.

Members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee demanded answers from Mr. Yang and General Counsel Michael Callahan after the panel's chairman said last year's testimony by Mr. Callahan about the arrest of journalist Shi Tao was "incorrect."

Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang, right, and General Counsel Michael Callahan, testified on Capitol Hill, where they ran into withering criticism over information Yahoo gave the Chinese government.

"I want to take a moment to recognize the families of the dissidents sitting behind me," Mr. Yang said. "I want to say we are committed to doing what we can to secure their freedom. And I want to personally apologize for what they are going through."
