Cheap Camera and Mic Recommendations?
I've got a friend looking to get his first camera and audio setup on the cheap. Any recommendations that fall in the $500 range? He's unsure whether to go lav or boom mic, so suggestions are appreciated...

  • No matter which camera he gets, I recommend boom mic. Much more versatile. Can be used as a camera mic, hand mic or can be detached from the camera and hung over or under the audio source (talent, interview subject, etc) whereas the lav mic has less range, is harder to hold and generally has less of a dynamic range. I don't have any specific recommendations of mics in this price range, only that he goes boom (so to speak).

  • Here is
Camcorderinfo.com's best of 2007. I have no actual gear knowledge myself but I feel like Camcorderinfo is sort of all over it. Their pick for best cheap-o camcorder is the Panasonic PV-GS85.

  • I currently shoot on a Canon HV-20 with a Sennheiser MKE-300 shotgun mic. I have 9 years DV experience and as far as production quality goes, you can't do much better for the price. The mic is aroun $200 and is honestly some of the best sound I've gotten from a shotgun mic ever. The camera runs about $800-$1200 and is in my opinion one of the best compact video cameras ever made. period.
