In their own dark and funny words, four teenage girls tell us everything we need to know about sex, parents and gym class.

  • Wow. The writing in the essays really is very natural and paints some very clear pictures.

I think a great companion piece to this would be some sort of follow up in about ten years. I'd love to see how they react to their own teen angst once they have a few years' worth of perspective as an adult. As Rebecca pointed out, the cause of that angst may vary from generation to generation in terms of the specifics, but the themes are fairly universal.

It would interesting to see if those specifics have different resolutions and long term impact, or if the authors just get over it all like the rest of us (almost) have.

  • The one about gym class is especially good
About once a year, I visit my mother's house and I dust off the journals I kept from my teen years. Every single time, I am surprised by how awkward and sad and desperate I was, and I'm a little shocked I ever made it to where I am today. It seemed that I might die from humiliation, or from listening to The Cure too much.

I love to read essays like these, because it's a reminder that being a teenaged girl is a terrible experience for just about everyone. There's always someone more popular, dating a cuter boy, getting the lead in the play, winning a coveted spot on the cheerleading team. And even THOSE PEOPLE feel like their arms are too skinny or their teeth are too far apart or their knees are too knobby.

I'm definitely going to track down a copy of this for myself.
