Our movie is a conversation about "pepe," the Haitian Creole word for "secondhand goods." We took a radio broadcast and interwove it with live footage from our trip to Haiti to create a patchwork of voices, coming together to make sense of the pepe phenomenon. For Haitians in the age of globalization, it's all pepe all the time.
Pepe (Secondhand) is part of our larger project about the culture and history of used clothing and diaspora communities. Visit http://www.secondhandfilm.com for more.

Fantastic work. I really loved the way that you used the radio as the spinal interview rather than a traditional sit down, it was very creative. As our world becomes more and more globalized, issues of material transfer become necessary to explore. I liked how you presented both the positive aspects [cheap clothing and recycled material] and the negative [the impact on the sewing businesses]. I would love to see the full length!

Thanks so much for your comments! I just watched the piece linked to in the above comment about vintage trunk shows. It' so fascinating that used clothes have so many different meanings for so many types of people. In Haiti, we were told that the wealthier people (but not quite wealthy enough to fly to America to buy clothes) will have "high end" pepe dealers do house calls, so that they don't have to go to the pepe markets in town. So it's there too!

Nice job! Beautifully shot and edited. i especially liked the final bit, where the speaker explains how this phenomenon has changed how people think about second-hand clothing as no longer carrying with it the aura of its previous owners. Fascinating!

I love the way the formal manipulation of time and space in this film reflects the life of pepe throughout history and across cultures. Congratulations!
-
great video! i really loved hearing from women - the one who altered her pink pepe shirt, and the one who talked about women's reluctance to wear secodhand clothes. do you have footage of a woman making her own clothes out of pepe? i'd love to see that in action.

Loved it. The women were so interesting to listen to. Thanks for sharing.

I loved seeing the many incarnations of clothes. I hope some of the stuff I've dropped off at Salvation Army has made its way to Haiti.
Is there a stigma attached to buying Pepe, or is it too commonplace for that?
