Other than documenting horrific accounts of one retired local, crippled for life by police, and others who had suffered broken ribs and noses, I met local blacksmith John Monaghan. He discovered the local water supply of 10,000 people was being polluted with aluminium coming from the Shell Gas Refinery site.
Despite laws in place to hold Shell to account for any pollution, the aluminium was coming from the site in dangerously high levels and neither Shell nor the local council seemed to be doing anything about it.
This documentary follows on from the More4 News report,http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/society/environment/irish+gas+plant+under+.../568972, aired in June 2007, and looks at the policing and the pollution in County Mayo.

great vid! this is such an important issue for all of those communities around the world who see big oil and gas companies come in and take over their land and pollute their water. thank you for putting this on current!
-
Don't those police officers drink the water too? Or do they get paid in bottled water. Disgusting.
-
wow....excellent video....is there anything I can do from the states to help? i'm am so tired of watching the people get fucked by big business...
-
Great video highlighting some of the injustices that have took place with the corrib gas issue.
It is the important issue in Ireland to date giving the injustices inflicted on the local people stemming from this project.
Also exposes or politicians and system that support these injustices and the handing over control of Irish natural resources. -
The behaviour of the Garda (Irish police) is truly appalling and has obviously been sanctioned by the government as all attempts to put a stop to it have failed. The Irish national media, particularly RTÉ, the state broadcaster, has played it down as much as possible and have been biased against the local people.
Thank you for highlighting this. It needs to be seen by a wider audience.

Excellent. You've done an amazing job of broadening our knowledge on this topic. This topic needs to be verbalized on a greater scale. Keep up this important issue current. You've done a good job with your edits, added emotion for the gentleman who was attacked and still cannot walk unaided. These stories need to be told. Thank you.

very well researched video that exposes the power of corporations over democracy. you thought this only happened to poor people in africa? well now it's here in the european union, in north west ireland. shell are riding over democratic wishes and are paying security forces to enforce their will with violence. their pollution will injure and kill many innocent people. and they don't even pay a penny in tax. this film should be everywhere. well done to the film-maker, and watch your back!!

Great Work On The Video.... As an Irish Man I've known about this since the start but it is not getting enough coverage in the Irish Press lately.....As if the evidence in Your Video is'nt bad enough,The Irish Government are not even making any money from the Gas Reserve....They have given it to any company who can tap it........Typical Of One Of The Most Corrupt Governments In The Western World....
-
I can not understand why this video is not on TV already. Shows that vc2 doesn't work and that current is corrupt up to its teeths and just pushes their cronies.
-
Really great pod, I'd be interested to know how much the local council and government are getting from Shell financially to turn a blind eye to the brutality that the police are imposing down there. I'd also ask what other companies are benefiting from this with the fact it's managed not to raise much press attention.
-
Superb film, superbly made. I say this with the utmost respect but this is the Irish Erin Brockovich and if that gets people watching it then so be it. It's a very important issue and you've reported it with style, professionalism, and detail. Good work.

Best documentary I have seen on Current all week.
-
Highly competent and documented journalism but MUST get a larger viewing throughout the world.
Royal Dutch Shell and BP are now working with Exxon and Total in Iraq, I imagine the regulatory authorites are nowhere as strict as the UK or other parts of the west so I ask what protection do the Iraqi people have against these multinationals-

It's time again for the Irish people to have a rising...not against any invaders of our beautiful land, but against our corrupt cartel government. If they think this is democracy and freedom..they are mistaken!
We deserve it to our generation for the generations past who fought for Ireland to rise up against these crimes against humanity and our planet!
