Google was established on the idea of being able to have any information at your fingertips.
Google recently made a deal with the Chinese government saying that they would filter anything that the government doesn't want their people to see.
This is directly filtering peoples access to the media.
I support the first amendment fully but i use Google on a daily basis... am I a hypocrite
It doesn't directly affect you or me but this brings up a hunt for money in today's economics.
now, i don't know the full extent of this so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Try Googling Cheney Impeachment. I did last week, several times. Nothing!

you are saying: "why dont they apply the good rules they agree with WHEN IT COMES to international branches of their company"
this is exactly what has been happening for many years, corporations abuse of other social environments, other countries, that have not evolved legally as much as the US or other "developed" nations. the sole purpose of moving abroad has been to maximize profits, abusing of the legal wholes many "developing" nations have in such relevant issues as environment, illegal traffic, labor, government and corruption.
so u r right, they should apply globally what they say is their policy, but in this case, so that google keeps on adding clicks from china's market, they agreed to apply communist guided lines to their search engine, to their product.

Great post that we should all act on.-------------
Just as we should speak out against immunity for telecom companies who may have supplied information for illegal domesic spying, we should look for alternatives to Google as well as letting them know why we are doing so. -------- Selling themselves out to China's oppression for the almighty buck is not something that will foster good relations between the U.S. and China. --------- Those relations are something that will determine our future ability to effect certain human rights changes that would be beneficial to the citizens of both countries.--------- http://www.altavista.com --- http://www.akjeeves.com -----http://www.ask.com --- http://www.frooglecom ---- are just some competing search engines you can use temporarily until Google gets the message or permanently if it doesn't. -------Reverend Ivan Norris "Ino" Fulwell -----------
May George Bush bless you and keep you and cause his face to shine upon you and give you peace. Please repeat after me as we speak in tongues - Amen and Amen and Rhondala Shondala Fondala Hondala.

Oooooh Google's in trouble now!! I'm changing my home page. It hurts, but it must be done. As Americans, we should NEVER support censorship, even if it IS happening on the other side of the world. What a bummer... Should we get rid of our google tool bars too? :(

Rob, your internet humor has me cracking up. Silly.

Uninstall Google updater. When you do, you will get a screen asking why you uninstalled Google updater ar this URL:
http://desktop.google.com/support/bin/request.py?contact_type=uninstall&hl=enScroll down to other and check that box here is what I wrote in the comment section:
I do not agree with your corporation's decision to honor what I consider to be questionable or illegal requests that could violate anyone's first and/or second amendment rights. I also disagree with your firm's willingness to acquiesce to China's demand that they be able to censor free content on the internet THROUGH Google! If you have other hidden files on my computer please use them to show me how to COMPLETELY do away with all vestiges of them and any other software and any support programs that enable illegal or even 'authorized' surveillance by outside sources that that are currently installed OR are resident on my computer or that can be monitored without my continued and timely notification each time they are in operation. Also please publish publicly, how persons can defend themselves against measures being taken by government or private contractors that are still being challenged by civil liberties groups that include but are not necessarily limited to issues being litigated by the American Civil Liberties Union.
Please make this information available on your website with adequate information of their scope along with detailed information on the methods in which they are installed, kept operational, protected from discovery by the user/owner of the computer and the manner and paths they use to monitor private information.
This message is not a suggestion but rather a demand. The full capabilities vaguely outlined in your privacy statement do NOT adequately describe all possibilities and ramifications of these portions of your software systems and therefore negate my open-ended acceptance of those same terms.
Your swift cooperation in this matter will be expected and appreciated.

Laura Ling goes to China where an information battle is taking place between China's 120 million Internet users and the Chinese government's web censors.
Google knows everything about me. G-mail, Picassa, Earth, Maps, Apps, Translator ( him I wonder if my Translating "Stop War" into Arabic,وقف الحرب!, caused any flags to go up?) Etc.
Soon we'll all want Google phones that will tell you what to eat, what to buy, and essentially what to think.
I wonder what the Google FIR chirp project looks like? Just kidding, I hope. I think Google expects people to find work arounds and that even restricted access will ultimately benefit Chinese citizens? Too bad they couldn't force uncensored access in China, after all, Google is pretty bad ass. Since it has been suggested above that Google searches here, in the US, don't even give the truth, am i just dreaming?
What do you think?
I uninstalled updater, did that help me at all?
Are they making a bet at Guantanamo Bay as I speak? In a dog kennel?
Essentially, I think more information is better than less, thanks Google. Love ya
