Long admired and desired by legendary artists and writers, the syrupy green liquor is once again infiltrating the market, due in part to shifting legal barriers in the United States and Europe.

The green fairy, the green goddess, the green muse, the glaucous witch, the queen of poisons, whatever moniker you choose, absinthe is coming back.

This wonderful article illustrates the heady history and spirited relationship that absinthe shared with literary and artistic legends such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Hemingway, Van Gogh and Oscar Wilde.

An intoxicating read!

  • It must be noted that this recently legalized absinthe has an altered formula in which the chemical thuyone is now added in doses that are not dangerous.

  • It's still alcohol, right? Still dangerous and stupid.

  • If not drunk to excess,
it is neither dangerous nor stupid. One glass is plenty enough. Excessive ingestion of water is dangerous and stupid and can kill one.

  • You're right, but as a society we tend to overdo our alcohol consumption. Not many stop at just one or two on occasion.

I know you can drown with as little as a tablespoon of water, but excessive ingestion of water? I have a hard enough time drinking my 8 glasses a day.

    Sorry about my over generalization.

"Still alcohol, still potentially dangerous and stupid, if abused?"

Can You Really Drink Too Much Water?

In a word, yes. Drinking too much water can lead to a condition known as water intoxication and to a related problem resulting from the dilution of sodium in the body, hyponatremia. Water intoxication is most commonly seen in infants under six months of age and sometimes in athletes. A baby can get water intoxication as a result of drinking several bottles of water a day or from drinking infant formula that has been diluted too much. Athletes can also suffer from water intoxication. Athletes sweat heavily, losing both water and electrolytes.

Water intoxication and hyponatremia result when a dehydrated person drinks too much water without the accompanying electrolytes.
