Yellowstone National Park, once the site of a giant volcano, has begun swelling up, possibly because molten rock is accumulating beneath the surface, scientists report.

Yikes!

  • Wow it's like a bad
Pierce Brosnan movie waiting to happen. Definately on my list of things to see in my life. Here's a magma flow in Hawaii where I think you can see lava flowing live. That would be really cool...

  • This is an interesting transcript of a lecture given about the geology of Yellowstone which reflects not only the scientific aspects, but gives a glimpse of the local attitude. Having grown up a mere hour away from Yellowstone, I've actually felt at least one earthquake that resulted from the seismic activity of the dormant volcano. What many people don't realize is that the whole thing is a bit of a running joke in the area, as you can see by the introductory notes of the transcript. It wouldn't be lava flowing like in hawaii, it would be a huge explosion that would, as I said, wipe out significant portions of Montana and Wyoming. There's nothing we can really do about it, especially those of us who live there, so we crack jokes about how paranoid the rest of the country is.
