Turkey Bombs Iraq?

According to the AP, Turkish helicopters bombed abandoned villages inside Iraq (though why destroying abandoned villages helps against the PKK rebels is unclear to me). 4 Turkish soldiers were killed in a clash today, taking the toll of Turkish troops killed since September about 50.

    They say that Turkish helicopters dropped flares, but no artillery. Perhaps trying to control the rhetoric and war of words to prevent full scale conflict in Northern Iraq, the only region of the country that had been actually stable?

    This is important, Turkey is the most Western like government in the Muslim world, they also have one of the largest armies.
    The thought goes like this, you feel the effects of a war 100 years after it is fought so one could say that WW1 and the way the Middle East was carved up is now being felt. TE Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia sought to convince his superiors in the British government that Arab independence was in their interests, with mixed success. Mybe we should have listened or at least read Seven Pillars of Wisdom.
