  • It is not as simple as you think. Many fat people do not eat too much, they have a very slow metabolism. Then, there are three basic body types, too - Ectomorph, Mesomorph, Endomorph, as well as various combinations of these. Some people have a very fast metabolism, they can stuff themselves silly all day and never put on weight. Then, there are some people with glandular imbalances or diseases who become fat even though they eat only non-fattening foods in very small quantities. Then, there are those whose body tend to retain water too much, so they are also fat-looking.

  • lol i supose it's a choice to be fat for most...and they can do something about it...

there's also the possibility of certain health problems that make it difficult for people to lose weight...

    either way, interesting views

  • Yeah, but at the end of the day it's a balance issue. If you take in more than you put out, then the weight will pile on. Medical conditions causing obesity are pretty rare.

Patient: "I've tried losing weight doctor, but I can't. It's my glands."
Doctor: "What - you ate them as well?"

  • Not so, bergus - many people eat masses of food every day and don't put any weight on, many others eat very little every day yet put on weight. Most obese people carry a gene that in the distant past allowed humans to survive the ice-age. There are also different kinds and causes for obesity, over-eating being only one of them.

  • Anyone can lose weight if they try, its not some genetic disease they have that keeps them from losing weight. Do some people have faster/slower metabolisms then others? Yes, but the way you are wording this Vierotchka is that fat people do not have a choice.

You are making obesity come off way too much as a disease rather than just eating more than necessary.

I myself lost 25 pounds by eating healthy over the course of several months. It was a very slow process, but I did not blame my bad genetics for my body storing those extra few slices of pizza.

  • Soap, what I am saying, basically, is that there are different types of and causes for obesity, not all of which are linked to the quantity of food eaten. Obesity is a disease, its type and cause need to be identified. Some diets will work for some of the obese but not for others. I know some obese people who eat healthy and small quantities, but they don't lose any weight. I know some slim to skinny people who eat like ogres, fattening foods and all, yet don't put on any weight. It is neither simple nor black-and-white. That you lost weight the way you did is a single experience and method that isn't applicable to all obese people. Your personal experience and individual experience is not the measure of all obesities and shedding of weight.

  • There are deeply embedded behaviors that make people fat. Count yourself lucky if you're thin and on the outside looking in. But generally, people are getting fatter because habits are changing.
