As a wise man once told me in second grade. "Nany nany poo poo ... cheaters never prosper"....
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 15, 2007 - Baseball superstar Barry Bonds was charged Thursday with perjury and obstruction of justice for allegedly lying when he said he did not use performance-enhancing drugs.
The indictment, unsealed Thursday by federal prosecutors in San Francisco, is the culmination of a four-year federal probe into whether he lied under oath to a grand jury investigating steroid use by elite athletes.
The indictment comes three months after the 43-year-old Bonds, one of the biggest names in professional sports, passed Hank Aaron to become baseball's career home run leader, his sport's most hallowed record. Bonds, who parted ways with the San Francisco Giants at the end of last season and has yet to sign with another team, also holds the game's single-season home run record of 73.

  • Barry Bonds is the only player in baseball to every use steroids. With this development, the issue has finally been resolved.

Well, at least not the only player in the bay area. Haha.

  • A-ROC - great pic you found. I love it. That being said, plenty of people get indicted but never convicted.

"I'm surprised," said John Burris, one of Bonds' attorneys, "but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. "I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before." Me too.

  • WITCH HUNT.
  • If Barry was a cuddly teddy bear, this wouldn't be going down like this.

  • Come on, Jbrilliant. Just because other athletes have used steroids doesn't mean he shouldn't be punished for allegedly lying about it? Please. That's like saying thieves shouldn't be punished because hey, there are other thieves in the world, right?

And jsaraco, I think his attitude matters far less than the fact that grew to three times his size within 5-6 years.

  • Wait a minute: "Just because other athletes have used steroids doesn't mean he shouldn't be punished for allegedly lying about it?"

So, you're saying that he *should* be punished for something he ALLEGEDLY did? Remember, he has only been indicted, not convicted -- and not for using steroids, but for allegedly lying about it.

Grasping at straws is what they're doing. "WITCH HUNT" is right on the mark, Roberto.

I choose to look at it this way: if Barry is really guilty of perjury, how come Rafael Palmeiro is sitting on a beach sipping coco locos, poppin' Viagras, and not in jail?

  • @hollyg - if he grew 3x his size in 5-6 years, he'd have been around 18ft tall weighing in around 400-500lbs. Don't forget - before Barry started to "allegedly" juice - he was already a big man.

@whyphil - in that before/after picture, he looks like a guy who was younger and thinner...and then started to actually take care of himself and devote lots of time to working out and basically grew into his body.

  • jsaraco...come on, don't take me so seriously. I didn't mean literally 3 times his size! Sheesh.

Minty...relax. Of course no one should be punished for alleged activities. That wasn't what I was saying. My point is that the whole "but he's not the only one using steroids so stop picking on him!" is a poor, poor argument.

  • On a happier note...
...Greg Anderson was released from prison today. Hooray! I wonder if its a coincidence?

    You're right, hollyg -- absolutely!
Relaxing is high on my list of things to do... I see a cold Tecate in my very near future. I hope you do, too :)

But, I would *kill* to see an 18-ft tall Barry Bonds terrorizing SF -- or better yet, 80-ft tall Barry, knocking down buildings and eating people like shrimp poppers: our own home run-hitting Go-jira!!

  • Rolew supports Barry...
    Listen!

  • "Barry stick to your guns!"
"Barry stick to your guns! It's a sad day in sports history..."

  • To win by injecting the body with a drug, negates all baseball ever has stood for.

  • For those of you who say "Witch Hunt", to put it kindly you are morons. Witch hunts were used to imply something that was obviously false to convict innocent people. Do they have a vendetta? Yes that is more of an appropriate word. Do not sit there and tell me you actually believe that he never used steroids and that he didn't lie about his usage to the grand jury.
As for the allegedly part, well they have positive test apparently on him so if you don't believe your eyes or the other hundred pieces of evidence that link him to steroids then believe the positive test.
In the end did others use steroids? Yes, many many many people did and they all deserve to pay for it. Is Bonds taking more of the blame than others? Of course he is, but they aren't doing anything illegal or unjust, other than the wasting of taxpayers money.
