MORE SOLDIERS DIE IN OUR OWN SOIL THAN OVERSEAS...

They are the casualties of wars you don’t often hear about - soldiers who die of self-inflicted wounds. Little is known about the true scope of suicides among those who have served in the military.

But a five-month CBS News investigation discovered data that shows a startling rate of suicide, what some call a hidden epidemic, Chief Investigative Reporter Armen Keteyian reports exclusively.

This is an issue that deserves at least a little bit of your time. Astonishing facts!

There is much more to the cost of the Iraq war than money...

  • Thanks Jade, That is terrible. We use them up and throw them out with no help available. Bush has cut the VA hospital money to the bone. What we do to our troops and vets is a disgrace. Look at homeless men more often than not they are Viet Nam vets, and already Iraq vets are joining them. God, when are we going to become civilized enough to not have wars that destroy our young people?
  • Thanks for sending me this. I keep well abreast of current events and I'm well aware of this situation :/
As the daughter of a man who died as the result of contact with Agent Orange...I'm all to aware of how the government drags its feet in regard to those who give the biggest sacrifice. Even though my father died 31 years ago, my mother continues to struggle to gain the benefits my father earned for her and the rest of his family.
They say there is no disposable human being. But when you join the military that is what you become. Only a pawn to be pushed around on a map in some general's office, discussed over coffee and donuts.

  • Quite sad. Although there could be many non-military related suicides in our soldiers too. Fact of the matter is lots of people commit or try to commit suicide soldier or no. Perhaps being a soldier brings it out of some. Sad.

  • I'm sure being a soldier does bring it out. Imagine the horror of having to kill people, and the fear of being killed for months at a time.
  • "One age group stood out. Veterans aged 20 through 24, those who have served during the war on terror. They had the highest suicide rate among all veterans, estimated between two and four times higher than civilians the same age. (The suicide rate for non-veterans is 8.3 per 100,000, while the rate for veterans was found to be between 22.9 and 31.9 per 100,000.)"

As tragic as the loss of any member of the US Armed Forces is, consider the following statistics:

The annual fatalities of military members while actively serving in the armed forces from 1980 through 2006:

    1980 ......... 2,392 (Carter Year)

    1981 .......... 2,380 (Reagan Year)
    1984 .......... 1,999 (Reagan Year
    1988 .......... 1,819 (Reagan Year)

    1989 .......... 1,636 (George H W Year)
    1990 .......... 1,508 (George H W Year)
    1991 .......... 1,787 (George H W Year)
    1992 .......... 1,293 (George H W Year)

    1993 .......... 1,213 (Clinton Year)
    1994 .......... 1,075 (Clinton Year)
    1995 .......... 2,465 (Clinton Year)
    1996 .......... 2,318 (Clinton Year)
    1997 ............. 817 (Clinton Year)
    1998 .......... 2,252 (Clinton Year)
    1999 .......... 1,984 (Clinton Year)
    2000 .......... 1,983 (Clinton Year)

    Clinton years (1993-2000): 14,000 deaths

    2001 ............. 890 (George W Year)
    2002 .......... 1,007 (George W Year)
    2003 .......... 1,410 (George W Year)
    2004 .......... 1,887 (George W Year)
    2005 ............. 919 (George W Year)
    2006.............. 920 (George W Year)
    2007.............. 899 (George W Year)

    George W years (2001-2006): 7,932 deaths

These figures mean that the loss from the two latest conflicts in the Middle East are LESS than the loss of military personnel during Bill Clinton's presidency; when America wasn't even involved in a war!

    Race in general population:
    European descent (White) ............... 69.12%
    Hispanic ............................................ 12.5%
    Black ................................................. 12.3%
    Asian ................................................... 3.7%
    Native American .................................. 1.0%
    Other .................................................. 2.6%

Now... here are the fatalities by Race; over the past three years in Iraqi Freedom:
    European descent (white) ................ 74.31%
    Hispanic ........................................... 10.74%
    Black ................................................ 9.67%
    Asian ................................................. 1.81%
    Native American ................................ 1.09%
    Other ................................................ 0.33%

  • This is why people should NOT be gung-ho to go to war!
