As the US approached the islands of Okinawa in 1945, the Japanese Imperial Army encouraged residents to kill themselves as an alternative to the impending doom the Americans were to bring.

Many residents took the Imperial Army seriously, which resulted in mass suicides throughout the islands. When the Americans arrived, the residents were left alone.

Controversy has erupted recently. Japanese text books have taken out mention of this event. A 100,000 person protest has gotten the government to pay attention, and has made them reconsider their stance.

  • Who decides what makes history?
history books are an interesting concept. because really, you can't put EVERYTHING into books. the problem is who is making those decisions. the government? the schools? the people? who decides?

  • I think that the people are right in this matter. something so significant in a country's past should not be hidden to protect the image of the imperial army. History is made by significance. The mass suicide of a nations people based on recomendations of the military is very significant. although it is a dark moment in time it shouldnt be erased.
