  • It's a cute idea, peace love and harmony, but when guns are take away, the people who keep them or obtain them illegally have the power. And when the criminals have the power, what do the police do? And better yet, when the police become the criminals, or act on behave of them, what then do the law abiding citizens do? No, the right to bare arms is a fundamental one. Tighter gun control is one thing but for the government to eliminate the ability of it's citizens to revolt, you have a scary situation.

  • You raise many interesting point futurist, but I still disagree. I believe that it is possible to effectively eliminate guns in our society. This sounds like a terrifying and unrealistic prospect, but paired with proper legislation it can be very possible. One idea, make it a mandatory life sentence for possessing a gun during a crime. I'm not saying its a perfect idea, but its a viable solution to your point about leaving the criminals in control. Sure, we'd fill up our jails pretty fast, but that seems to be one of our national pastimes (war on drugs, anyone?). I also don't believe political revolt is dependent on guns and violence, we have a plethora of historical events and figures that shows us that (Ghandi, MLK Jr). I'm happy for an opportunity to expand on this topic when I am not drunk, and on the side of the street in the middle of the night. Peace and love indeed.

  • The fact is that guns exist. Just like the alcohol prohibition, people will turn gun creation and distribution into a crime just as drugs have become. If police weren't to have guns, they wouldn't be much of a threat to criminals with knives, swords, tasers, or any possible weapon. Statistics show that the more guns that are present, the less gun crimes that occur. Think about it.

  • I appreciate the idealism, and my heart is with you. But I don't think its the most excellent idea.

I just believe it should be harder to get one. But the thing is the people who want them will make or get them anyway.

I guess gun production should slow substantially. Same with ammunition.

There's only so much the ones that want peace can do to effect change when there's so many that don't believe in being mellow or not being assholes.

  • OK first of all guns were not created to kill other people. The were created as a tool for survival. Spend a bit less time on the internet lying and do some research instead. I own a gun and i didn't buy it to kill somebody i bought it for recreation and for food. I would love peace but i hate to tell you its not gonna happen in our lifetime. Do you realize that there are people in this country that get disability in this country for being illiterate and its harder for someone with MD to get it(trust me i know) maybe we need to worry about stuff like that first instead of the guns that are keeping you alive,so you can have an opinioin.

  • So you want a "war on guns" like the "War on drugs"? Yeah.. How long has that one going? The law abiding don't use illegal drugs (hence the name) just like making "all guns illegal" would only disarm the law abiding populous leaving the "sheeple" prime targets for the WOLVES!

  • Getting rid of guns wouldnt get rid of the need to protect yourself. If someone breaks into my house with a knife or some other weapon, I sure as hell want a gun. I know that if I dont have some sort of fire arm, Im screwed because I cant win in a knife fight.

On a another note: What about guns for protection from animals? Any time I go fishing or backpacking deep in the mountains, I am taking a gun with me. Not necessarily for shooting an animal, but for scaring them off with the sound. And what about hunting? How are you supposed to go hunting without guns?

  • Coming from Europe I find very weird the fact that you are associating guns with protecting ones self. If for a U.S citizen is easy to get a gun legally then for criminals it will be 10 times easier whether they obtain it legally or illegally. I respect the fact when people admit they own a gun for recreation purposes or hunting etc rather than claiming its to protect themselves. In my eyes its just an unrealistic claim, an excuse to justify gun possession. Looking at some of these claims one might assume that you are living in a war zone of some sort. I believe that its the duty of the police and the state to protect citizens and the citizens taking the law in their hands creates only chaos. Making guns legal is a stupid solution just to cover the law enforcements laziness, inefficiency or apathy to take radical measures to eradicate crime. People seem to say how we should obtain a gun to protect ourselves since the criminals walk around carrying all sorts of guns, but no one really considered that the more guns we get the more guns they will get and the more hostile they will become to achieve there unlawful acts. I think it's very a very complicated issue and i don't have an opinion as to what needs to be done but at least don't fool yourselves that you own a gun for self-protection....I don't remember when it was the last time someone saved his/her life or their family by shooting at a criminal but i remember when it was the last time a college kid was shooting indiscriminately at his innocent fellow classmates killing many of them.

  • I have several types of weapons. I have shotguns & rifles for hunting and recreational shooting. I am registered with several shooting associations, I enjoy hunting, I eat what I kill and I do it all under the governing laws of whereever I am hunting. I also have a nice glock 17 that is next to my bed with the sole intent taking out anyone dumb enough to enter my house uninvited. Thankfully I live in Texas where it is still legal to defend your family and property. I have never aimed one of my weapons at a human being nor do I intend to unless I plan on pulling the trigger. If you think for 1 minute that removing the guns from law abiding citizens will suddenly make it all better and turn the whole world into a peaceful global society you are drunk, far too drunk and you need to seek help.
  • so what if an intruder gets in the house while you are not there steal your nice glock 17 or any other gun you say you keep in the house and use it to get in your neighbors house who happens not to have a gun???
its either everyone or no one thats my view!

  • You're right, that COULD happen, but guess what, my job is to look after my family. When I leave the house it leaves with me, my other guns are all kept in a locked fire safe.
