One can't go wrong with the brands listed but once you get the basics, branching out into one of the types of liquor and trying to become an "expert" in it is great fun. Rum is my personal area of expertise and I pretty much stick to Zaya Gran Reserva, a 12 year old rum from Guatemala as my main drink of choice (on the rocks).
