Something else you won't see in the "mainstream media" while they distract Americans now with more Natalie Holloway stories and what Britney Spears did for Thanksgiving, as if I give a damn. This bill is sweeping in its vagueness regarding how it will and can be enforced and is something we should be crying out loudly against. Will environmental groups now be branded as "homegrown terrorists?" When are the hearings going to start in branding Americans subversives now for opposing this "war" or wanting a cleaner planet? Rep Harmon should be ashamed of herself for this bill. It does absolutely nothing to fight "terrorism" but everything to strip an already bare Democracy of the last vestiges of freedom of speech we thought we had. I will state this, however: No piece of paper is going to stop me from expressing my views or standing up for what I believe in because this bill is not only the antithesis of all Americans have died for to preserve this nation, it is an embarrassment to Democrats. To think a Democrat would even think of this is appalling. I can then only presume that Thomas Jefferson, and those who stood up to the first King George would have also been considered, "homegrown terrorists." Seems like we are going backward instead of forward. And pay very close attention to it regarding the Internet and the subtle language used in criminalizing free speech here.

Great post! Scary stuff isn't it? They got this legislation through with democrats in power. I can't believe Americans don't care. They all just move along. By the time Americans realize what it going on, it may be too late.

Dream PoliceLook I apologize for distracting from the real issues, but Thought Police made me think of Dream Police by Cheap Trick.

Rep. Harmon seems to have forgotten her history. Has she even read the Constitution?
This country was founded on revolution, but I suppose, now as a member of the status quo, she feels compelled to prevent dissension at the cost of freedom. -
1984 is way overdue!!!the demlicans and repulicrats(as a whole)havn't givn' a damn about the people in generations,so it not as if they will awakn any time soon for the people.so when the people start a critical mass of enlightenment(wake up to this stupid game) the corporatons/government(samething) reminds the people"arbeit macht frei"as displayed over the gates of the concentration camps in nazi germany="work will set you free".Raise most prices for living=work more or we will take away your television and all the other distractions we got you addicted to.Consume!Consume!Cosume!as the second Führer of America (baby bush)wants us to do to combat "terrorism".the first Führer of America(daddy bush)did state in 1990 that its time for a change a New World Order.Obviously they were hopen no would think or do anything about it.....i hope im incorrect on this one

Kucinich Breaks With Dems, Supports FreedomPresidential candidate Dennis Kucinich was among the six - count 'em, SIX - Representatives who voted against this terrible bill. Imagine...a presidential candidate actually breaking with the herd and doing something right...take note, Hillary.
-
OMG! I honestly think we should provide an attorney to each of our legislators so things can be explained to them very slowly before they are allowed to vote on anything. We've got a lovely bunch of idiots.

I wonder if they think just because they are there that they need to be passing laws? They could be having impeachment hearings or playing cards.

Why do they bother passing laws? They refuse to inforce laws already written. I have tried to think what can be done to save our future. Someone wrote Superman wears Al Gore pajamas. This link is the link to our future. http://current.com/items/85491991_al_gore_s_speech_oct_... A voice they could not take away! Al Gore would not let them ignore him! We would not let them ignore him! I wonder if Al Gore would join the '08 race, would the Supreme Court take away our rights to support our 'Candidate of Choice'? They could step in and put in special rules for a 'New American Party'! I sure wish he would try! Wouldn't it be great if he could wake Americans. Stop the SPINNING IN IT'S TRACKS. If he would challenge the spin being spun with facts, he would force them to cover facts, not spin. Al Gore could put them all to SHAME! Someone needs to start feeling shame! What is being done to THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, OUR THREE EQUAL BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT AND OUR CONSTITUTION is SHAMEFUL! (IT'S AN ASSAULT ON REASON)! IT'S A SCREAM!
-
My dream is we impeach the whole damned Supreme court and start over. Except any that voted against installing Bush President. The Republicans choose half and the Democrats choose half.

I am scared by this law as well, but it will happen.
Our response must be one of a middle road (see Buddha or Aristotle). We must acknowledge that the government needs a commission to study homegrown terrorism issues, while working to narrow the difinitions so that it does not have the potential for misuse of the current legislation.
See the attached letter that I just sent to Senator Barbara Boxer for ideas, and please write to your own Senator and encourage others to do the same.
"I have recently read about this bill and find that there are several problems with it. Most of these could be dealt with through changes in definition making it more specific and less likely to inadvertently infringe upon the rights of persons engaging in the political process from the legal and canstitutional fringe.
"The first change would be to alter the definition for "homegrown terrorism" from the planned ot threatened use of force to specify planned or threatened "physical damage to persons or property".
"A sencond change would be to not use the term "extremist belief system" anywhere in the bill. Frankly, Ghandi and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. both had extremist belief systems, as does PETA, and while I do not always agree with PETA, they do have a right to exist and organize. I urge you to find a way to not even adress ways people think, or we are trying to become thought police, as did HUAC, of which you are very familliar.
"Finally, please limit this to a fact finding commission. Take off the portion of this law which would create a "Center of Excellence" at the end of the commission. An open ended organization without specific limitations can be misused. If such an organization is found necessary after the commission finishes its work, the members of Congress can establish such an organization at that time.
"Basically, the idea for finding out more information about homegrown terrorism is needed, but by not being specific enough and creating an open ended government agency could easily lead to many of the problems that were associated with the McCarthy period."-

It hurts me to say this but in some ways I think America is far to corrupt to change it's ways. If you look back on it's history the people in power tend to twist and pervert the constitution for their own gain. It continues today in the form of the Iraq War, national ID cards, the Patriot Act (I and II), the continuing fight to privatize the internet and now this.

Conniepae:
I understand your frustration, but honestly, I do not believe any one candidate in one election run by that very status quo is going to do what needs to be done now alone. Ben Franklin stated that we have a Republic if we can keep it... the operative word there being "we." How did we get to this point? Do we not as a people need to take responsibility for how far we have fallen? One election won't change that. It has to be an assault on the MSM along with a concerted en masse movement of the American people to educate and empower others to stand up to the status quo, and that won't happen until people are informed enough to bring about that enmasse movement. Are we even close to that yet? That is what I believe CURRENT can be about, which I also believe is one reason why Congress is getting jittery. Once you have mechanisms in place seeking to do what they see as an attempt to supplant them, they try to put the clamps on which I see with this bill... however, they need to be made aware that there are more of us than them out here, and that we are the ones who are going to lead and not be intimidated by their fear mongering. Also, the last man to become president who decided to expose the truth from inside was shot to death in Dallas on a November afternoon... I don't wish to see that repeated, so again, that is why I believe so strongly in what Al Gore is doing from outside that cesspool to give us a very important message about the role we all play in this. So what I do hope to see is a truly concerted and sincere effort on the part of Americans to as Al Gore stated, "disenthrall" themselves and become more involved in a Democratic dialogue and overcoming the fear that can paralyze reason. That will be a good start to us fighting to take back what they have taken from us. But we have to really want it. The question is after years of television and other forms of mass brainwashing, do we on the whole? Does this Democracy really matter to the majority of Americans? I sure hope so.-

devo64, It's corrupt because no one was paying enough attention or was willing to speak out about wrongs. It has to change NOW.

Teacher_Rick: Good points. Unfortunately, I don't happen to trust them with a bill like this regardless of how they change the definitions on paper. They've already done all they can to make me believe otherwise. And with Democrats on the whole capitulating to them at every turn, it doesn't do much to restore my faith.

Yes, now is the time and I hope the new generation coming into power over the old will be able to bring about that change. I'd just like to mention that now-a-days I don't get my news from the standard main stream media sources. Instead, like many I'm sure, it's all about the blogosphere for me and I agree with JanforGore that Current is a driving force in the new age news media. As long as sites like this are alive and well there will always be a means of free speech. Keeping that is something worth fighting for.
-
JanforGore, you are right, we can't get our country back with one voice, Al Gore's. I would like to see him empower many voices. Our voices on the internet are not heard by people who do not frequent the sites that are spreading the message. One man could use his voice to start a conversation. I too fear for anyone willing to speak 'Truth to Power', but few voices can be heard over the spin machine in place now, called mainstream media.
-
JanForGore -- I really like your use of Ben Franklin, but I wonder if anyone even on Current is willing to actually be involved. Do they know what their local city council is considering? Their county Board of Supervisors? the School Board? Do they have a position that they have though about on taxes vs. infrastructure? Have they become so polarized that they are unable to debate openly? In the last fifty years, public participation has gone downhill in our system, and public participation through political clubs, organizations and actual attendance at local governing bodies is crucial. Current can help as a tool for education and communication, but we have to give up a few nights each month just to getting out of our houses and going to the meetings. It is not much, but if we do not do this, our republic will continue to become a oligarchy, a government ruled by the rich and powerful rather than truly selected by the people in a democratic process.

Teacher_Rick: I agree with you about the apathy and it is very disturbing. I am planning on starting a meetup in my community at the beginning of next year about the climate crisis to try to spread truth and work on solutions, but I know I will probably only get at most two to three people. I won't be discouraged though, and will not give up. Perhaps that is the answer: not giving up as hard as it might be to keep going without getting discouraged. We do need to return to that agora where people actually discussed and cared about matters of importance regarding their country. Those are the discussions we should be having instead of watching "Dancing With The Stars" or some other vapid tv show that drains your brain instead of exercising it. If people could just turn off their tvs for one night a week and come out to talk to each other it would make a great difference.

It's easy to be apathetic if you aren't getting any warnings. The people in general haven't a clue anything it wrong. We have no media. The people on this board are for the most part political junkies. We know because we were looking long time ago. It is entertaining for us. We got warnings. There is very little we can do to warn others. But, keep trying anyway.

I told my co-workers about presidential directive 51, and they had no idea it existed... Now they do and hopefully they will pass it on. So yes, I will keep trying.
