Former premier Nawaz Sharif filed his papers to be a candidate in Pakistan's elections in January, but has said he will not serve in a government under President Pervez Musharraf. He also said the elections would only be acceptable if the state of emergency was lifted and the constitution reinstated. Benazir Bhutto has also filed papers to run, though both have said they would consider boycotting the election if Musharraf does not end military rule.
Musharraf, meanwhile, is expected to step down from his role as army general, and be sworn in as a civilian president on Thursday, 11/29.
