Six thousand students, a 30% increase from last year, applied for the Class of 2012 through the non-binding early action program. Much of this increase, many say, is a direct result of Harvard, Princeton, and the University of Virginia ending their early admission programs.

It is interesting that the first paragraph in a story from Georgetown's own news service states:
"The bump comes after other highly selective universities, including Harvard, dropped their early admission programs."
Apparently it takes other Universities changing their policies in order to attract incoming students to Georgetown. I would much rather see a story about the numbers of incoming freshman applicants increasing due to an increase in the quality of Georgetown's academic programs. Perhaps an increase in well-known and highly regarded faculty. Even an increase in attractive, single female undergrads would be a better story than an increase based on other Universities. -
It's a legit point, but I think it's important to recognize that Universities are businesses and that competition with "competitors" is a reality.
