Although a little dated this article shows people have been trying to tackle the problem of alternative and sustainable energy for years...what makes people think Google can step straight up and find a solution? Just because Google will help you find that picture of Britney Spear's latest 'panty shot' it does not mean they can save the World! -
David Cameron is trying a similar practice.
The only thing is, for wind power to truly work it needs to be used in a high wind area otherwise you might increase the carbon output of your home... -

Google could start by looking into this source of free heat for steam / energy production:

I can't believe it wouldn't be cost effective to bury some pipes in the ground and circulate some water through. However great or small the energy produced would have to be greater than the cost to implement it.
I don't believe alternative energy production has to be some massive new thing, but rather a lot of smart small things until we break through the illusion of energy creation.
And while I'm at it, why not take advantage of geothermal sources such as volcanic and hot springs in an environmentally non-invasive way?-
