Operation Ivy depicts the incredible amount of stuff students throw away at the end of the academic year at five elite colleges, Yale, Harvard, Trinity, Williams, and Wesleyan. It shows how people who live and work near the colleges react -- by dumpster diving the stuff for themselves and their families.

  • Some people take their Dumpster Diving pretty serious. I remember seeing books about how to "DD" years ago but these days.... (in my best Oprah voice) "We've Got Wiki!"

  • A brilliant scandalous ridiculing of the over consumption of the spawn of the the elite bastards that rule this country.

  • Waste is such a ridiculous habit that is practiced not only with 'rich kids,' but with the average American!! Is it no wonder global warming is getting worse by the minute. Truly . . . 'one man's trash is another's treasure!'

  • "over consumption of the spawn of the the elite bastards that rule this country."

The elite? You mean about 80% of US society?

  • I think the reason it might seem more profitable at Universities is that when we first go off to college we get duped into buying a lot of unnecessary crap that we end up throwing out.

My friend goes dumpster diving at the end of every semester at Emory and she finds brand new or near new stuff every time!

  • Dumpster diving was a favorite past time of mine in high school... i remember diving in a nice neighborhood one day (ok, i actually only did it once but of course this once...), and my Uncle drives by and says "what the f"

B, what the hell are you doing? Do your parents know you're hanging out in trash cans? Anyway, the fun part is coming across weird documents and pretending you're Sherlock...

This piece was nice, great subject, but it's a bit long, and aside from being a bunch of interviews strung together, there's not enough footage of the actual diving and discovering of odd items.

it works on the level of showing just how wasteful americans (people) can be... college students, etc...

But that message could have been conveyed i think in a shorter amount of time.

Like, can you assemble an entire dorm room with found objects from the dumpster?

    Really nice work though.
