Ben Underwood has been blind since the age of 2 when cancer took hold in his eyes.
What has happened since is remarkable.
Ben has mastered a technique known as Echolocation.
Echolocation is similar to a dolphin's primary mode of environment assessment.
Ben uses loud clicks made by his fingers to gauge his surroundings but, what is even more amazing is the fact that he can tell you what the object is, it's shape, size and even material that it's made from.
Infact, Echolocation has been researched extensively for the last 50 or 60 years.
Some experiments have shown that most humans are competent of this skill, like anything it just needs a lot of practice and conditioning, but can take years to master.

that is unbelievable! it's incredible that he just picked that up as a way to overcome his inability to see.

A shameless little plug of People Magazine at the beginning there.
Nice story though....-

do you think that people that can see, have the ability to learn echolocation? because that would come in real handy during those sticky situations where the power is out, or you dont have the ability to use your sight to its fullest where echolocation might make it easier 'see' my surroundings more clearly than with night vision.

actually tests have been carried out.
some claim that echolocation is a normal part of our conscious, perceptual experience.
all it takes is conditioning.
