The vicious violence seemed staggering at first, I had no idea that Glasgow was engulfed in abject poverty at that level, it was a wicked sick pod and great to watch.

Never knew about this till now. Great insight on a topic people in the US might not be too familiar with.

So Glasgow like any City has it's bad areas and kids that are up to no good, however Glasgow is where I come from and want to let you all know that's it's a great place. Glaswegian friendliness, courtesy and helpfulness proffered to visitors from abroad is legendary. So my American friends please remember that when you visit Scotland... don't forget about one of the best Cities in the world. Glasgow. I want to see another Pod about the other side of the City. Please feel free to email me all your suggestions for a Pod and let's put one together. scott@current.com

good pod however may need to do one on how glasgow has developed as a city too. The young boy had good intentions but was it really needed. Scotland gets slated as it is, dont need anymore excuses. Yes some parts are really bad but so many others cities ie: nottingham etc are proberley not far behind. My family grew up there and I love to visit there as its a up and growning city.
Now lets do a POD on the good side too.

    Hey. Good Pod.

I did a documentary two years ago with the gangs in Barmulloch, in the north of Glasgow ( The Barmulloch Gringo). The gang kids did most of the filming and we showed their work in the local community.

It was amazing the change you saw in some of them, when they were given a chance to see that there is more to the world than what's on their front door step.

It's amazing the amount of youth work that's going on for these people. The only problem is the few that don't embrace it and still have the " there's nothing for us to do here but fight" attitude.

You can check out the Gringo's website here :

Although this was a great pod at highlighting some of the major cultural problems in glasgow, I (as a glasweigan) feel that it took these problems out of context.
Despite what the statistics (which i always try to do with any kind of cultural statistic) say, in reality glasgow is very much the same as any large european, international city , it has its dark rough areas but equaly as many if not more "affluent" and safe areas.
My point simlply is Glasgow is a CITY, and although cultures between citys may change the same basic problems are in all of them and the sooner we all stop viewing our citys as individal social distaster sites and realise and start to tackle the problems the the quicker the world will become a better place.

It's a real shame that you guys in Glasgow have this problem, but fortunately it doesn't seem to be as widespread as it is here in Los Angeles! I get the impression that the violence is basically restricted to only one (maybe two) areas in the city. I hope that one day gang violence won't be a problem anywhere in the world, but the truth is that that's a very unrealistic dream...
