I've linked directly to the story as reported by Corriere della Sera, a widely read Italian newspaper. The comments were published on November 30th.

Francesco Cossiga was prime minister of Italy from 1985 - 1992 and during that time he was forced to resign after revealing the existence of, and his part in setting up, Operation Gladio; a secret "stay behind" operation carried out by NATO in Italy after WW2.

I can only use google translate to get a bare bones translation of Cossigas comments. He is referring to an Osama Bin Laden video tape. The translation is as follows:

If someone can speak Italian and wants to do a much better translation then that would be great. For those of you too impatient to wait for an Italian speaker to translate this then here is the link to the page translated by Google.

  • Don't believe this for one moment! 'Mossad' is a nice way for our Italian friend to use thinly veiled anti-semitism - this is one step up from a drunken Mel Gibson saying that the 'Jews are responsible for all wars!'

  • The phrase "conspiracy theory" is a powerful one. You only have to mention it and people seem to recoil away with a disapproving face.

    The official story is a conspiracy theory. This we all have to remember.

    As for the 9/11 "conspiracy theorists" - they are all painted with the same brush. Including the nutters who discuss the "no planes theory" or "the mini nukes theory". These people are indeed idiots. But we can't throw the baby out with the bath water.

    If people aren't satisfied with the ridiculous stories that the U.S government offer, and people are a little skeptical of the issue in general, I highly recommend you watch a lecture by Professor Steven E. Jones given in 2006 at UVSC. It is in a very professional environment and it raises some interesting and damning questions.

    Take the time out to give yourself a better understanding of a very powerful event.

    Its not a great film to cover the topic, but it seems to be the most popular.

    9/11 Mysteries is better but it keeps getting pulled from Google.

    I'm always fascinated by conspiracy theories. I like to stay opened to different possibilities of what actually went wrong. But I need really convincing evidence (which is partly why I'm not satisfied with what the Bush camp have force fed us over the last few years). Here's a list of top 10 conspiracies for 9/11, and sure enough Mossad & the CIA made the list!

  • DJewel, are you saying former Italian Prime Minister is anti-Semitic because he is or because he expressed something he knows or believes to be true? Or, are you suggesting he is intentionally spreading malicious propaganda?

    It seems anyone who does not like the tactics or policies of Israel (such as their use of military force) is labeled as anti-Semitic. Is that a fair assessment?

    I don't always like or agree with for example, members of my own family, but that doesn't mean I love them any less.

    Doesn't Semitism have to do the creation of the Jewish state of Israel? (If I recall correctly). So, if a person like say the former Prime MInister reveals something he believes to be true, does that mean he is opposed to a jewish state?

    If I misunderstand something, please correct me.

  • Voyager - thanks for your comment - what I mean is that whenever something shocking happens - such as 9/11 - people seem to reach for the 'it must be the CIA in league with Mossad' card. Its repeated so many times - for instance the claim that Diana's death was carried out by the CIA and Mossad - that its just become an easy way out for people to explain something painful. I think conspiracy theories like the one the former Italian Prime Minister is advancing are spurious . Also the allegation that Mossad were behind 9/11 doesn't mean we can consider this as a 'tactic or policy of Israel' as you put it. People are free to criticise the real policies and tactics of Israel, without being accused of anti-semitism - but I personally am very sceptical about his comments. But likewise - you are free to believe what he says! Best Wishes, Daniel

  • The former president of Italy said it was the CIA and Mossad working together. Whether he is correct or not, what he said is no more antisemitic than it is anti-American. He said Mossad, the CIA of Israel, did something evil. The Mossad is creature of government, not a religious body. The former president did not claim that Judaism is responsible for 9/11, nor did he claim all Jews or all Israelis are responsible for what Mossad might have done. No one claims all Americans are responsible for what the CIA did. All "made" mafia men are Italian, but most Italian men are not mafia.
    I will not be silenced by accusations of antisemitism. My country is more important to me than being thought a nice person; I am sure most Israelis feel the same way about their country.

  • DJewel, it is just a little too easy to start firing out accusations of anti-semitism in response to claims like those made by Mr. Cossiga. Being anti-Mossad is not necessarily anti-Jewish any more than being anti-Mafia is being anti-Italian. Criticising the actions of the government of Israel is no more anti-Jewish than criticising the government of Italy is anti-Italian.

    A number of facts point to some official Israeli involvement, starting with the infamous 'dancing Israelis' who had sufficient foreknowledge of the event to arrange to video it from a distance.

    There's also the matter of the 120 or so Israei 'art students' who were arrested subsequent to 9/11 for trying to gain entry to sensitive government buildings and the homes of federal workers. It was also reported at the time that some of these so-called students lived right next door to Mohammed Atta and were connected to a Mossad operation in the same town. All of these bogus students were eventually deported from the US.

    There may be no absolutely definitive evidence, but there is a lot evidence that points in the general direction of the both the Mossad and the CIA. The facts to support this conclusion certainly carry a lot more weight than those that are used to prop up the official fairy-story. To cap it all, there's always that creepy Mossad motto... "by way of deception, thou shalt do war"

That is all any government in the world cares about..."who has the most money.?"   • What he says is EXTREMELY intriguing. I guess that goes to show that all fo the world's leaders despite attending the same conferences, social club, and knowing each other well are not all in coalition with each other. He said the "Zionist world order". That is a racist idea perpetuated by Nazi groups as well. It is saying the Jews control the world like a Jewish Illuminati. I wonder sometimes if in a non-racist way myself if there may be some powerful controlling international bankers that are Jewish, though I hate the way it is called "Zionist." I'd just say some of the most powerful men in the world happen to be Jewish.

  • DarrellB - "Zionist world order" is not a racist idea, neither does it say that the Jews control the world. Zionism is a political philosophy, not a race nor a religion. Plenty of Jews are anti-Zionists. There are Christian Zionists too, I must point out. Anti-Zionism is not the same thing as anti-semitism, either. Please do not confuse the two.

    You are correct Zionism is a political philosophy, but it is a political philosophy with with supremacist and racist results. The idea of a single state for a single people is way past its sell-by date. If almost all Western nations must accept an influx of migrants from other nations AND offer them rights equal to those held by the indigenous population, then I don't see why Israel should be allowed to be an exception.

    Anti-Zionism is not, as you say, the same as anti-semitism. One is a valid objection to a particularly objectionable political ideology, the other is a blind hatred of individuals based on their ethnicity.
