No, No, No - Santa Bans 'Gats'

I played with plastic guns - 'gats' - as a kid. My parents were fine with it. Now, however, there's quite a lot of drama surrounding the entire premise of the kiddies playing with toy guns. I suppose in our post-Columbine world Madagascar might be on to something of a precedent worth following...?

  • With the news out of Omaha, it doesn't seem like the worst idea in the world to try and discourage the prevalence of guns in our communities.

I haven't seen studies that say playing with guns as a kid makes you more interested in using them as an adult... I think there are studies that show video game users are less sensitive to violence. But for any study that says these things, people find a way to dispute them. On a purely anecdotal basis, little boys play with toy guns while little girls essentially do not. And again, anecdotally, I can't think of a single one of these shooters that was a girl.

What's the thought on curbing child's play with toy guns?

  • This response is akin to banning toy cars to cut down on road deaths.
There is a vast gap between play and reality here - I played with toy guns as a child and paintballed later in life and never once had the urge to pick up a real gun let alone shoot one - This despite being exposed to the real thing on a daily basis growing up in N.Ireland where there were always armed soldiers and police on the streets - so I dont think play as a child can be cited as a cause of guncrime. There should be a more common sense approach that explored the root causes in Madagascar's society.

  • I know you've heard this before, but it isn't guns, cars, motorcycles, airplane, bombs, or even toilet seats that kill people. Some one should look up the statistics on how many people are poisoned or stabbed each year. Also how many who die from a gun shot vs how many die from a stab wound. I played with toy gun and real guns as a child, but I learn the difference. But what made the difference was how much I learned at the hands of my dad. He is the reason I never think of killing some one. I have at least one gun, one bow, one knife, one motorcycle, and one toilet seat and I assure you, if I kill someone intentionally, it will be with the toilet seat.
PS My own phrase "Guns don't make killers; parents do." or at least the lack of parents.
The only thing guns do is make killers 'infamous.'
