I love my cats, but I hate cleaning the litterbox. So when I heard about people who toilet train their cats to use a regular toilet, I couldn't wait to try it. Here's my short video showing how you can do it too! You'll never have to scoop a litterbox again.

  • that was awesome, I'd try this with my cat, but 1.) my dogs might get him if he's out of my room with out my supervision and 2.) i'm not do sure I would want to contribute to the bacteria in the public water system.
If you read the back of any litter (well maybe not ANY litter, but sweat scoop at least) they encourage you to not flush litter because of the risk of contaminating water sources...
    =/

  • nixifer, I think that what they mean by not flushing litter in the toilet is that doing so can clog-up the pipes that lead to the sewage as well as build up in the sewage and interfere with the water purifying system, because cat litter is not biodegradable and usually consists of dry clay. We produce more bacteria per defecation (urine is generally sterile unless one has an urinary infection) than does a cat, and the bacteria are basically the same - e-coli for the most part.

  • Can you make your cat do this though Julie?

Teaching it to go to the toilet is one thing, making it clean up after itself is another!

  • Hey there, I encourage everyone to toilet train their cat. I have never heard of poop being an issue "contaminating" the public water system! Ha ha, I think that's why they treat water before they send it out to us. I never used to think about poop much before embarking on this crazy journey, but I like knowing that when my cats jump on my lap or the table, or walk on the couch or my bed, that their paws have never scratched around in a dirty litterbox. They aren't tracking any of their "business" around the house on their claws and paws. I think that's a good reason to try it yourself. Good luck!

  • Cool instructional video.
Love the editing and the music!
Wonder if anyone could teach a cat to do its hairball-eat-too-fast-vomit-y business into the toilet bowl?
    Now, THAT would rock!

  • to vierotchka.

I use a flushable-biodegradable litter, it specifically says to not to flush it in California, and that its better to dispose of in the garbage.
And as far as the microbes (ie: bacteria) in feline fecal matter, it IS different, yes there is e. coli, but there are also other pathogens that don't normally occur in human normal intestinal microbiota.
You know how pregnant mothers have qualms about having cats?
Its the bacteria in their feces, there's some extremely pathogenic microbe that can harm the fetus if it manages to get in the mother's system. I forgot what the condition is called.
Anyway, the State/municipal water treatment/supply doesn't/don't test for every single type/strain of bacteria; they test for "indicator bacteria", which means they test for the most common bacteria that occur in certain environments to detect contamination.
    E. coli is one of the indicator bacteria that they test for because it "indicates" fecal contamination, usually human
I'm pretty sure that in California you're actually not allowed to flush litter, clay, wheat, wood, old newspaper, or not, and it's not because of the possibility of clogging the pipes, it's because the risk of contaminating the water supply.
    Chlorine doesn't kill everything.

  • OMG this is hilarious!! I have to say, I am intrigued. I wonder if I could use a similar training method with my dog...
  • I was doubtful that this would even work but it looks like you found a way Julie. Great video. Hmmmm now it has me thinking about ways to train my dog.

  • Really funny vid. Seems like it would work too, I'd just be afraid my cat would start going there with a newspaper.

  • not only is this video helpful and informative... it's clever and entertaining... even better no litter box means no litter, no packaging, no trucking... nothing but flushing... so it's also green! with a touch of brown and yellow of course...
