  • The gun control laws are only a good idea in a sense that if a criminal cannot get a gun then they can't use it against you. I would be willing to trade any weapons I own if I thought that it might make a difference in security. And the two places you compared can't be truly taken accurately because they are different ares with different people. Now if you took the same area and did an experiment to see if more crimes were committed with or without guns then that would be more accurate.

  • There is truth in what you say about it being different areas and people. But in the real world there isn't a way to do that, so I made do with what I had available.

  • Guns in general create the illusion of personal safety, however I support the right to own any type of single action rifle or shotgun you want and to own as many as you want, but I believe all handguns should be made illegal except for police and military. I have no problem with gun ownership. The real issue is the TYPE of guns people can own. Military style assault rifles and automatic weapons of any kind serve no legitimate self-defense or hunting purpose. Generally its only the criminals that use hand guns. Also, another issue facing gun owners is the illusion of safety they feel their handguns provide them. The reality of crime is that ninety-nine percent of handgun owners will never be able to reach their guns in time. Unless you are literally driving with one hand on the wheel and the other gripping a gun, there is nothing stopping you from being carjacked. Many, many police reports for stolen cars indicate that there was a gun somewhere in the car. The drivers could never reach it in time. The carjackers will be standing at your driver side with the gun pressed against your temple long, long before you have any clue your in danger. No time to reach into your jacket and no time to bend over to reach the gun in the glove compartment. Same with run of the mill muggings. Statistically the muggers are stalking you for a long time before you are even aware there is an issue. The idea that you can whip your gun out and scare away the bad guys Dirty Harry (or George W Bush) style is pretty much a myth perpetuated by network TV. The reality is that one hundred percent of the time criminals have no idea if you have a gun on your person or not, and yet they attack anyway. Handguns, clearly, offer no deterrence in terms of crime. You would literally have to be walking to your car with a shotgun racked and ready in order for a criminal to know for certain you had a gun. The rest of the time they will just jump you from behind. Sneaky? You bet. But they have to be careful because you might have a gun! So the idea that a handgun is going to be a deterrent to a criminal or that youd ever be able to pull your weapon BEFORE the muggers had their guns pointed at you is fiction a significant amount of the time. But I support gun ownership. Own as many shotguns and bolt action rifles as you want. Heck, even throw in crossbows and tasers and mace. But handguns do little to deter criminals and are rarely able to be used to ward off an attack and generally are only useful to criminals. Limiting their manufacture, production and distribution is the only effective way to get them off them street and out of criminal hands.

  • I personally know somebody who successfully prevented his car from being stolen because he had a gun with him.I do not agree with you.We have the right to own whatever type of weapon we choose. Why restrict the smaller, easier to use ones to police and military when it would be perfect to keep with you in the car or in your home, where there is not room to wield a big honking shotgun? No,the facts speak volumes.unarmed people make better targets. But,hey, you can give up your guns if you want. That's your right.I am keeping mine.Including my pistols. That's my right.
