  • This was a really well made pod and super interesting. However, you didn't have your subjects say the word "libertarianism" until almost the very very end, so I was a little confused about what the point of the Free State Project was [and most viewers need a little help in knowing what libertarianism is, why New Hampshire, and what are the issues]. I think if you front loaded it with information about what they actually do, what libertarianism is etc. I would find myself caring more about how they got to New Hampshire and where they stayed. Great camera work and your editing is amazing!

  • Good Pod Christina. As for the free state movement though, I'm not so sure. In my opinion, retraction of government is what got this country into the current mess that its in. Although we'd all like to believe that every person on this Earth can act with responsibility and integrity, history has boldly proven otherwise. I feel government is a very necessary part of our society because it holds society accountable for its actions by imposing laws and the threat thereof. Do I think we need the next Stalin or Lenin in Washington? No, not at all. But we do need someone or something to watch over us and hold the powerful accountable

  • this is a pro-ron paul piece. also everyone sitting around the room agreed they didnt want the govt. to head up education systyem but i didnt hear who would be stepping in place of the govt. to teach children. churches? these 9 guys living in a house in new hampshire?
    like most libertarian talk, i heard problems but not many solutions.

  • Gregorhazy, I was on the local school board for the last 1+ years. The federal and state governments' rules eliminated much of the flexibility that we would have liked at the local level. I think we could provide a much better education at a lower cost if the federal government wasn't involved. Besides, there is no provision in the US Constitution for the federal Department of Education and all of its programs. Many people are dissatisfied with the education provided by government schools and choose to send their children to private schools. Until last year we had a private school in our city that provided a good education and only charged $2500 per year per student for tuition. Unfortunately it isn't easy competing with a government school system that takes your money whether you like it or not, then offers you a "free" education. To sum it up, the federal Department of Education is both unconstitutional and a hindrance to the educational process. The state mandates restrict flexibility of education and while legal, are not needed. The local government school system can be replaced by privately run schools that compete for your business by trying to provide the best education available for your dollar. People who cannot afford the tuition could apply for scholarships and grants. By the way, I was not paid a dime for my service on the school board (in fact it was costing me money to do it). I also home school my kids. No government required.

  • audiable adam, you want to completely privatize the education system, correct? this seems to be the libertarian's first option on most issuses. "the govt. cant do anything right and people cannot come together to reach a common goal under the govt. it must be done privately with investors." once you privatize the system then who is in charge of educationg your children?
    some company who pays its school board members to run their school for it? i think not.


    i attended a private high school bc i live in louisiana where we have the worst of the worst education system (think britney spears). it cost $2500 a year to attend and my parents had a hard time paying for both me and my sister to go to a private school for 4 years. what about the people who cant afford $2500/year? is there anything for them?

    public schooling works in certain areas. the charter schools down here that have been taken over by the local colleges (state schools) are working and improving. don't throw out the baby with the bath water.
    home schooling is also not the answer. the parents are in charge of the education but the kid is stunted socially. education is only half of what you get out of high school.

    libertarians---govt is not the enemy. the people who have high jacked it are!
    please do your best to separate yourself from the republican party and if you think that a third party wont/hasnt work in america, you should all band together and replace the republicans with libertarians since both parties are about polar opposites and libertarians claim to expound conservative values which left the republican party with goldwater.

  • The beauty of the United States is that it is comprised of 50 individual and unique statehoods that are united as a larger entity to demonstrate - "freedom".

    The reason why I do like this piece is that it shows how people with common interest can in fact live together, create a community. I think we can all learn something about how these New Hamp-shire "libertarians" (which somehow = pro Ron Paul???) participate in their local governmental process.

    anyways, i think we are all "individual and unique statehoods" and i am pro-state rights but remember that we are all in this thing we call america together and when our neigboring state prospers so do we.

    i also believe that the supreme court is the guardian and prime interpreter of the constitution, not the president.
