I think this view is considerably one sided and refuses to cover the whole issue. This is one persons battle with their drug addiction but there are plenty of people out there who get high everyday and lead perfectly productive lives.

That was a pretty F*@#ED up thing to say Voytek. There's a difference between having an opinion, and being cruel. If his parents want him to have some self control, they should give it a try themselves. They are all obese, aside from the brother, and are addicted to a drug all their own. It's the kettle calling the pot black, and they need to set the example with healthy lifestyles. Perhaps if this young man had some actual guidance and positive feedback, then he would believe he was capable of more. I'm guessing that the way this kid sees it, all he has going for him is his reputation as a major pot head. It's his identity, and if he were to give it up, he'd just be a fat loser, without the added "glamour" of being a drug user. Maybe he sees himself growing up to become just like his parents, in comparison, ending up an overweight pothead may not look so bad. Me personally, I prefer to pay attention to the individual and try to understand them, as opposed to labeling and dismissing them as though they were worthless. His own brother called him a fat, unemployed, loser, and Voytek, you sound just like him. Not cool.

I agree, you cant judge someone for being a so called loser because of their weight. The 300+ pounds could be a result of low self esteem and confidence to begin with. This also leads many people to drug abuse as an escape, marijuana is not addictive, it is the individuals own perception that it can alleviate his woes which makes it addictive. Finding his own self worth is what is required in this situation and the drug abuse and weight issue will resolve itself.

I agree, which is why I find it interesting that we have so many drug offenders in prison. You take a weakened person, label them "CRIMINAL" and send them off to Crook College. SMART.

this is so one-sided it's ridiculous. prodius is absolutely right. while phil certainly needs to make changes in his life, it's absurd to blame his weight or anything else on a weed. why don't you do this video over, but next time, instead of focusing on phil smoking pot, look at phil's relationship with his parents and siblings.

i think we can all agree phil is not a casual pot smoker, menny people are and lead productive lives but phil is not one of them.he is only 22.in my opinion a good drug counceler could help him. some one who has been were phil is right now..they can try to instill in him the fact that all the time hes getting stoned and doing nothing with his life ,lifes clock is ticking .when hes 35 and still right were he is now its hard to get those wasted years back again.years that could have been productive.years that an employer could could look at on a job aplication and see that he has some kinda work history....would you hire phill to do a dangerous job like running a pipe cutting saw?

    Wow,
I'm from Amsterdam, and am certainly not against weed, but I do think its a good thing to show the other side of weed use. A side that people don't see to often.

That is just it though, this is the only side of weed use that anyone sees because no one is going to make a video about the successful, therapeutic weed smokers because it is illegal. Phil clearly has a job or some form of income because he needs money for his habit, I am not saying he does not need help or that he is perfectly in his rights to smoke 5 grams a day but this video is clearly demonizing marijuana. From this video he does not seem to have many positive influences in his life at all, so maybe this video should have been about what its like when there is a kid with only negative influences and see where it has gotten him instead of "he smokes a lot of weed and now a year later he is a failure and a loser" because weed did not make him this way it was the constant lack of positive reinforcement from his friends, and family, as well in part himself.

Although not surprising considering the forum, it is nice to see there are those out there who know the truth with marijuana. While it may not be for everyone, it is definitely not the evil the gubment attempts to portray. I can honestly say that a large number of my friends are smokers who live successful, productive lives. As far as Phil goes, this young man simply needs some positive structure in his life. Maybe some exercise, maybe some vocation/education/training. Simply showing marijuana in the light that was shown in the video is in the very least incomplete. In the most, irresponsible.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. This video is not finished. I also follow a marijuana smoker who is a great success that smokes everyday; I do show both sides. It is true that Phil is completely surrounded by negative influence in his life. His brother Mike even admits to being one of the huge negative influences by pressuring Phil into smoking; making Phil their guinea-pig just so they can laugh. I am not trying to make marijuana look bad but focus more on the individual caught up in it. Some people just can't handle weed. My estimate is that the next part of this will be uploaded in the spring of 2008.

Salvia is not anything like LSD. Since cannabis is not addictive and smoking it is not a medical condition, there are no rehab treatments for it, nor is it a reason to see a doctor.

I reckon Phil was obese long before he began smoking pot. To link the two is disingenuous. There are several different causes of obesity, over-eating being just one of them. Phil's parents aren't exactly slim, either, and one cannot commit a minor for smoking pot. This is one profoundly dysfunctional family - perhaps the causes for both Phil's obesity and pot smoking are to be found there.

I've been smoking pot for over forty years, and I have been a happy, productive and successful person throughout.

It all comes from parents and personal problems, it has been always my opinion about drug-addicts and over-weighted ppl. I have a close friend here in B/quilla, Colombia, and he has the same-o problem that phil has, and it is so freakin related to his weight, he has a pretty bad self-steem, but thank god he is now calmed down, and smokes less than half he used to. I also smoke marihuana but it has not been a problem or addiction for me. The problem with phil can also be solved by a close friend that doesn't smoke, but not a pretty face, just a good soul, but.. most of this has to be with his parents, they should try to understand him.

It is obvious that Phil catches a lot of mental abuse from his family. Even after quitting for 4 days his dad says "that's nothing". He is completely unsupportive of his son and any efforts he makes. It's like your child coming up to you and saying "Daddy look at this picture I colored for you" and him replying "Well you haven't colored the whole page and you didn't stay in the lines... it's not good enough!" People smoke marijuana for many different reasons- medicinal, recreational, socialization, etc. Many of the same reasons that people drink alcohol. Moderation is the key, something Phil probably hasn't had a good example of his whole life. Phil doesn't need to go to rehab, and if he did go, what kind of response do you think he would get from people there addicted to coke, meth, heroin, or prescription narcotics when he says "Hi, my name is Phil and I'm addicted to marijuana"? Phil needs supportive people in his life that won't chip away at his self esteem on a daily basis. I think this film should not be about how marijuana has affected his life over the last year but how being degraded your entire life by people you love and trust can drive you to want to be high all the time just to escape the pain. And yes, there are many people who smoke daily and lead very successful, productive lives, myself included. Marijuana has a bad enough rep as it is, why blame it for this guy's problems/dysfunctions when it's clear there is something much deeper going on there?

I did not want to hurt anybody or be cruel. If I was I am very sorry. I just wanted to say that you will be better off taking care of your obesity first. You are risking your health and maybe life being so fat. People who dont tell you that are not really your friends. Smoking pot may be OK if you dont smoke 5 grams a day - it is just so much smoke going straight to your lungs. If you have to smoke on a daily basis try taking few hits in the evenings...instead of smoking all the day long. You will save your lungs, your money and will have more time to think about more serious problems. Good luck and take care of yourself my friend! :)

I would say everything in moderation, if you eat 2 much that is bad, a cup of wine is fine but over used harmful, even sleeping to much leads to health problems, point is all is bad when you get 2 much.

But if you look at this as weed is the problem then you must surely look at the person first before condemning that weed is what is making that individual reliant on it...

Keep in mind that in the system "Aka Social Services" kids are being drugged with bodily harming drugs, "zoloft zyprexa" and other drugs. Rather then helping the kids, they drug them and cover the problems. Rather then help and Guide them.

True some kids are helped by the drugs but MOST are overlooked and harmed... "Liver damage, mental instability, ext...."

So yes weed can be hurt you if use incorrectly and so can the system when they prescribe drugs, all can be used in a negative manner if used with the incorrect education and lack of understanding. But freewill should never be taken UNLESS it interferes with others freewill.

So if he wants 2 hurt his life, So be it... But only give him the crime if others then him is hurt.... And remember the parents CHOOSE 2 help him, he is at the age to be removed from the house so they deal with the consequences of there actions. If they kick him out that could help him by showing him responsibility. But NOT labeling him. Help him threw action and advice.

I am pro weed BUT I still say in moderation.... Not a crutch, Like ALLL things.

Just goes to show how wrong you can be, i thought drugs was an appetite suppressant, i reckon the heart will get him before the weed ever does.

Cannabis is used not only as a pain-killer and nausea-killer on patients with HIV or cancer, professor_pasty, it is also used as an appetite stimulator. People who smoke cannabis are not junkies, cannabis is not a hard drug and is not physically addictive. Smoking cannabis can sometimes bring on quasi unquenchable munchies.

our generation and kids are in danger of ending up like that
his parents just allowed him to do whatever he liked, never teaching him discipline via spanking when <13 yrs, and just giving him reason to keep doing what was allowed, as it felt good. I was like that, but now I am recovering from addiction to masterbating. I still have dreams of sex scenarios i created en-mind, and it is hard to nap w/o rubbing my penis. I hope all other "old" boys (^20 yr old & not helping anyone but own lusts), and parents of children learn discipline from this. It is where we will be sooner if not fought, tooth, & nail.
