It seems a black hole is pummeling a small, nearby star cluster with a jet of highly charged radiation.

  • The universe is huge and doing stuff separate from the human race. We are mere specks, living in an infinite existence. We think our problems here on Earth are so significant, (and they are as far as a global level is concerned. After all, we have to put up with our own mess.) but on a universal level, they mean nothing. Every time I begin to complain, I wonder if my temporary discomfort is even worth getting upset about.

  • of course
We can live to see and be with all these thingsWhat could be more important than our how we feel

Plus . We are specks. but specks that make up this huge hunk of universe

I dont really know I'm no genius. I'm just talking

  • To say that nothing matters, I feel, is synonymous with saying that everything matters. We are specks that make up an insignificant hunk of the universe, but nevertheless, something about man's existence is significant. Perhaps one of the greatest advancements of humankind is our creativity, our ability to think, and our often neglected (IMO) ability to think abstractly. Perhaps one of the even more fascinating traits humankind has is that of individuality. I wish mankind would actively engage in the development of these traits on an everyday basis. Conscious humankind, new thought, and perhaps some kind of social evolution.

And none of us are geniuses, but all of us are good at something.

  • How do you think that we could actively engage in develping individuality. I think it's an interesting idea

  • It's what I try to do everyday. Actively think about who I am and my role as an individual, as a brother, son, friend, and so on. I always try to be a vessel of positive energy and do my best to spread that to everyone I meet. From what I can understand about myself, as soon as I meet someone I have them figured out, but on a very BASIC level.

When I start to learn more about an individual, I can read signs as to why their personality and lifestyle is the way it is. It helps me understand one on their level (not that any one's level is higher or lower than another. The term "level" is used as a way to say "a persons individual mindset based on how they might react to my own and others actions" in one simple word. Haha, call me lazy.). It's good because it allows me to be very open-minded to one's lifestyle. I try not to judge and only learn from the people I meet.

I have learned that inspiration can come from anyone and that I, as a human being, can better understand myself through the company I keep and the way I was raised. I am always sub-consciously reminding myself that life is generally okay and that beyond all the war, smog, suffering, and awfulness of the human race, there is still poetry in life. There is still beauty in nature.

Even though we walk through our lives skeptical of our fellow man and fearful of making awkward eye-contact with strangers, there still lies an invisible current of love that makes us help a stranger carry something, give a peace sign to another person in traffic, or give something to someone with nothing. It is this mindset that gets me through the day and it is also what I am actively trying to accomplish as an individual. Kindness, understanding, and social harmony.

I might not agree with you, but I'll still think you're alright if you are in fact alright.

  • There is so little we know, so little we see. Descartes once said "I think, therefor I am." addressing the ever precedent topic of being. I would say that the root of our insignificance, or the root of our individuality, comes not from a galactic level of cosmic space, but rather how absurd everything around us is. There are not many people who can grasp the scope of Albert Camus' writing, it takes something more than brains. It essentially outlines the damage an absurdist view can have on the individual, and although this may be very true, I cannot help but take such a view.

Does the idea of "being?" not strike you as such a random, bizarre and absurd thing? If not, then you have not thought about it enough.

My point being this; Everything around us is just so Absurd. Why is there something, rather than nothing? These questions may seem to be unrelated to this article, though maybe the reason we are so unique, is due to the Absurdity in our lives.

  • Well-said Joshua. Camus is one of my favorites actually. :D

I think that inside of this absurdness is a cosmic order and that man being part of this celestial system, is subject to this order. I don't really think that the root of our individuality or insignificance is that of our earthly existence, but of our deeper connection to everything else. Look at it as if it were a tree, with our external personality (as in: how we perceive, understand, and act among society/reality) being the trunk and leaves of the tree, while the internal personality (being the: consciousness) is the root in the ground. It is that root, I believe, which separates us in our individual conscious mind and also connects us. Our roots can meet in the ground, and converse and reach another level of understanding. Our minds are what separate us, but also bring us together. Everything is connected through the energy of the universe, be it an invisible current that runs through our bodies, or the sounds of conversation that influence our conscious minds.

I know it sounds a little new-agey, but what I want to stress really is the science of it. Broken down, everything is basically different energy working together. Basically, what I mean is, human existence may be absurd and meaningless, but it's fantastic and beautiful too. We have the ability to look at a sunset and feel moved by it. It's molecular poetry.

I don't think we're going down the right path by asking "Why are we here?" or "Why is there anything at all?" I think the right way to think is, "I am here, right now, what next?" To define ourselves and understand our conscious minds is why we're here. So is to eat food, procreate, and ride bikes. We ARE here.

And with that mindset, is it not impossible to transcend greed, selfishness, and hate? If we can define ourselves in such a way that we, in turn, practice empathy and sympathy towards our fellow man? If only we could develop our personalities in a way that never conflict with any other personality, perhaps we could live our lives with a little more meaning. It sounds idealistic, absurd even, but striving for that understanding of the world around you is what can bring peace to an individual. Positive energy for everyone.
