Excerpt:
"The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday.
""We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference.
"A delegation of Lakota leaders delivered a message to the State Department on Monday, announcing they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the United States, some of them more than 150 years old."

This is so cool. I support them fully. Also they are smart for capitalizing on a time when the international community is not so thrilled with America.

SO INTENSE!
I am amazed and wish that I were a part of it!
how incredible is that?!
a group of individuals living within the borders of the USA actually denouncing their citizenship.
I think it's amazing and beautiful.
and I fully support them.-

GOD BLESS THIS QUEST!!!
-
I think they'd have been better off waiting until a new administration takes office. If anyone is ready for Manifest Destiny pt. II, it is our insane, apocalyptic president, GWB. That being said, I am proud of my people. Go Lakota People!

only seems fair considering the government has already broken those treaties
-
We need to give it back to them.
Remember that song from Australia that talked about giving back the land to the Aborigines? What was that called?
That song sums up my feelings on that one. -
Revolution is coming!
-
This government has never understood what is most important to the Native Americans they ground under their heels. I support the Lakota Indians.

Revolution and then Civil War; a little history repeating?
-
I've got chills! May Wakan Tanka smile on them! Oh this is amazing! I support them fully.

how will that work?
I mean, props for doing it - our gov. broke the rules to the arrangements over a hundred years ago...but still...how would that work....
would the gov. deport them for not being citizens?....will the gov. acknowledge their independence?
hmmm...well done, all the same. Even if it goes nowhere - the statement will ring in the ears of the people -
jonnat17,
reservations, in my knowledge, are not federal land. that's how certain indian tribes are able to set up casinos in states that outlaw gambling, such as california. which means the US can not deport them from their own territory.
the only concern i have is the issue over 'settlements' within that territory and whether the lakota would apply liens on property that 'belong' to non-indians. it may become our own 'gaza/west bank' issue right in our own backyard, sort of speak.
i'll look into this some more. i, myself, am so stoked for the lakota people! i am not indian but i was raised to respect them. if WE americans recognize their sovereignty, we can start the healing process on our side.-

not to mention the fact that it's time someone stood up to our government and said "enough is enough"...
that's why i love the french....they don't take crap from anyone...Their government does something stupid - they blow up cars in the streets and march in the thousands...THAT's democracy...Power to the people! -
This should be on the cover of every news paper. Instead I'm looking at Paris Hiltons cooter. So sad.
-
They have my full support. To my mind this is within their rights to do, since it is their land after all. I haven't seen this in an mainstream media at all. This is big news! Are they trying to hide it. Bloggers, take to the forums and use your voice!
