The green fairy is what one can get a glimpse of in one's glass of absinthe as water is added via the sugarlump, drop by drop - at a certain point, the liquid begins to cloud, and at the moment it does so, one can catch a glimpse of a greenish undulating figure which was called the elusive Green Fairy.
The thuyone from the extract of wormwood is what produced hallucinations. Today's legal absinthe contains only a fragment of the quantity the illegal absinthe of yore used to contain, so you'd need to drink a few bottles before hallucinating... The high quantities of thuyone in the ancient illegal absinthe were not only hallucinogenic, they were very harmful to the nervous system and sometimes caused convulsions and even epileptic fits, as well as kidney damage and kidney failure.-

Current had a pod on Absinthe a while ago. Certainly pre-relegalization. Yum! I had some the other night at Dalva on 16th St in the Mission district of SF. FYI.
