Modern Christmas traditions are based on ancient mushroom-using shamans, according to this article.

Most of the major elements of the modern Christmas celebration, such as Santa Claus, Christmas trees, magical reindeer and the giving of gifts, are originally based upon the traditions surrounding the harvest and consumption of these most sacred mushrooms.

I'd like to see some sources for these claims, but the last time I ate mushrooms I turned into a flying fat guy, so I won't rule them out either.

  • In northern Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and Siberia, shamanism did include the consumption of the fly agaric. The active ingredient of fly agaric is such that it "survives" six or seven successive filtrations through the kidneys. On given feast days, the tribe's shaman would eat several fly agarics. After a while, the tribe's chief would drink the shaman's urine. Then, going down the hierarchy, the men and women just below the chief would drink the chief's urine, then those below them would drink their urine, and so forth down the hiearchy until all the members of the tribe had participated. With each filtering through the kidneys, the potency of the fly agaric would diminish, so those at the bottom of the chain had the mildest doses. I am not kidding, see http://www.treesforlife.org.uk/forest/mythfolk/flyagari...
