  • This is the 2nd attack at the SF Zoo. Wow.

It's a really small dry moat that separates them from the pedestrian walkway (we're at the zoo once a month)...

  • This is straight out of a movie. Totally crazy. What on Earth would you do? I'm sure some people make it a tradition every Christmas to visit the zoo, probably never again. Authorities are not ruling out criminal activity. Not a Marry Christmas.

  • Ok, remember - it's a TIGER! I actually feel bad for the tiger. I feel bad for the innocents that were killed, no doubt, but what do you expect the tiger to do?

  • I agree, jsaraco. In my opinion, wild animals should be left alone in the wild, not penned up in a cage for grubby six year olds to ogle. It's a terrible tragedy that people were hurt and killed, but perhaps this is an opportunity to re-examine zoos and their place in our culture.

  • Yeah, really. I mean, this tiger was hankerin' for some human flesh. Why isn't what they feed the tiger sufficient? Humans aren't even natural prey for tigers, why not go for some water buffalo or gnus? If they don't let animals be free in the wild, at least let them be well fed enough to not be a big problem like this.

  • How to survive a tiger attack AKA remember this next time you're having lunch @ Golden Gate Park.

  • More Zoos should be like the San Diego Wild animal park where the humans are in cages.

  • Hot 'Lanta Zoo vistors aren't fazed by the attacks. They trust in the protection of plexiglass and double chain-linked fences.

  • Hmm. I'm suddenly reconsidering the thought that I should visit the SF zoo sometime.

Seriously, though, I feel bad for the tiger; he's just following his instincts. Especially if the visitors were taunting her, as some people are speculating.

  • Back in the day, "Don't get eaten by large predatory animals" was on everyone's To-Do list.

  • I have always held mixed emotions about Zoos. Fascinating, but kinda' wrong and sad at the same time. I agree that the Wild Animal Park in SD has much more of the right idea.

As a teen, I worked at Marine World (then in Redwood Shores, south of San Francisco). "Backstage", handlers would often be walking full grown tigers on leashes, taking them from one place to another (for whatever reason). I'll never forget the first time I saw a tiger turn the corner in front of me.

The scene at the zoo would have totally made me crap my pants. It must have been utterly terrifying.

What a tragic story on all fronts.

  • That tiger probably had been wanting to do that her whole life. Zoos are sad.

  • Did someone let the tiger out?

  • In the words of Chris Rock-
"That tiger didn't go crazy, that tiger went tiger"
    tpalmer
  • @tpalmer - leave it to Chris Rock to preach common sense to the rest of us!

I wish Montecore could weigh-in with his take on the situation.

  • Here is the updated story with the mother speaking out and saying this has ruined Christmas for her forever.

  • Tigers belong in their natural habitat. I am sorry for what happened, but again, wild animals know nothing about the niceties in our "civlized" society. They know their instincts. I only wish they had used a tranquilizer gun that simply anesthsized the tiger instead of killing it, but I realize there wasn't time to think of that.

  • I can-not believe they shot the tiger and then had the nerve to say they don't know what happened. Well you moron the huge endangered wild cat got out of its cage and attacked the first threat it saw. I'm sure the two survivers are going to cause a huge deal about it and the tiger population is going to decrease even more because people are going to keep thinking that their mean flesh eating creatures when their not. Morons.

  • Latest update in this story:

The police dispatch logs released Friday and fire dispatch records obtained by The San Francisco Chronicle reflect a chaotic scene as zoo officials seemed ill-equipped to deal with a dire emergency.

Emergency responders and zoo officials, for example, spotted the cat moving about freely but waited for zoo employees with tranquilizer guns, according to the logs. Just minutes later, the tiger was viciously biting and clawing one of its victims at a cafe located 300 yards away from the tiger grotto. At the restaurant, police shot and killed the cat.

  • I'd be the first to say that animals belong in their natural habitat, but zoos do offer some educational benefit. What gets me about this situation though is the fact that our society rewards ignorance and stupidity. Granted, its sucks for the family of the deceased, but let's be real people -- it's a provoked situation. The tiger didn't just snap and attack these three people, but because our society is in a constant state of "reverse-Darwinism" we always cater to the weak and stupid. An education and common sense could have prevented this tragedy. Now an establishment that is trying to help and educate the community is going to be penalized.
