  • Dan is a good guy, I thought I heard Sugarhill was closing it's doors. Sad if true.
  • I spoke to Dan this morning...I don't think Sugarhill is closing anytime soon. They are so busy that I don't think they got much time off over the holidays...but otherwise they are doing just fine.

  • Reports of our demise have been greatly exaggerated.. (or words to that effect).

The rumor that SHRS was closing or being sold originated last Spring. We had a long time client make an offer to buy the studio that we took seriously enough to pursue. Word got out that something was going on, and all of the sudden I started to hear that we were closing our doors, or selling out. The rumor that scared me the most was the one that I, personally, was 'retiring' from the music business.

As it turned out, the buyers were funded by partner who had extensive real estate holdings. Right before we were to close, (can you guess?), the bottom dropped out of the market, their funding destabilized, and the deal was off.

Oh well,... we are just as happy to keep on rocking. SugarHill is starting it's 66th year in business, and we are about to ink a deal to have a feature length documentary film made about the studio. The radio show (The Radio Sessions at SugarHill) is rocking every month, Andy Bradley's book, and our tribute CD are all on schedule. (The book was just picked up for publication by The University of Texas' press).

Oh yeah!...nd were still recording a lot of great local and regional artists.

All of that said, these are 'interesting times' for the entire music industry. The nature of our business has changed quite a bit in the last two years. Now we work very closely with a new client base that does some of their work at home. Who knows what this year will bring, but I feel rather certain that we will meet any new challenges and be one of those left standing when the music industry stabilizes.

  • Thank you for the real story, I can't remember when I heard the rumor, but it was surely a surprise. I am glad to hear the legacy will continue. I have frequent chats with Thomas Glass about the studio and activities that are going on, but I moved out of Franciscan Studios four months ago and I haven't talked to him since. I would love to come by the studio and just watch the art created.
