Something fair that governments (federal and state) can do- eliminate tax benefits for "married couples", and change the laws to benefit all "tax-paying committed people", which might include married people. Make all people who want this tax status, whether they are married or not, apply for it. That would be fair. Then the church can keep their definition of "marriage" and everyone gets all their federal and states rights when it comes to taxes, be it personal income taxes and inheritance taxes. Seems simple and easy, right?
I suspect that the fight of the "moral right" would then shift from the fight to defend the traditional definition of marriage to one to preserve the tax, estate, and other laws as they are currently on the books. -
