  • This whole thing really bothers me. My family and I go there about once a month because it's really a beautiful place to spend some time, with or without the animals. It's a beautiful, lush park that's right across the street from the Pacific. Now, I can't imagine going there again without feeling a little skittish and sad.

I took this shot of one of the tigers there a few months ago while it was recuperating from an injury suffered elsewhere. This wasn't taken with a zoom lens, by the way. The cat was about eight feet away from me on the other side of some rather thick glass.

I know some people are against putting animals on display, but I think zoos perform two valuable services: they promote conservation, and raise awareness of nature and the environment. It's like this picture. You can look at it and feel a variety of emotions, or nothing. Seeing this tiger in person may leave you wishing it was out in the wild, as it did me, but I can't imagine someone walking away feeling nothing. If anything, they'll have a greater appreciation for why we have to take better care of the planet.

  • There is a short pod on the incident. A real tragedy for all involved.

  • Mike - as usual, you make some great points. There's some good discussion about this here...
