A Northland man who died after being bashed by a gang of youths in Sydney on Boxing Day is believed to be the victim of a racist attack.
Jim Tautari, 50, was walking home from a fast food restaurant when he was attacked by a gang of up to 10 teenagers, who beat him with baseball bats and golf clubs.
"It was definitely racist," said Tautari's mother Janie Henare in Moerewa.
She said a witness told family in Sydney that Tautari had been racially abused in a McDonald's restaurant before the attack. Henare said "10 white boys" had beaten her son. He died in hospital the next day.

I never understood the need to kill people for existing.
Hate all you want, but dammit, why kill somebody who isn't doing a damn thing to you? -
I was in Sydney earlier this summer (their winter, I live in the Northern hemisphere), and I thought it was a marvelous town. Now I'm just saddened, because I also spent time in New Zealand and thought the people there were wonderful. Hate crimes have got to stop. It makes me ashamed of my race to know that once again, some crazy white person/people have killed a non-white person just for not being white.
I agree with your all the way, MsGo. Christ, this isn't America in the 1950s--I thought the human race had progressed. Guess I'm wrong, eh? -
I remember in the 50's, black people were literally not allowed to visit Australia. As a black American, this only made me want to know more. What's new? Remember Jena ,Louisiana? Those young black boys right now, in 2008, are facing prison sentences far greater than white people face for similar offenses, Racism is alive and well. one love, Hoy
