New Year's resolution time; folks. Why aren't we more compassionate more of the time?

I think we live in a society that has a misguided underlying air of danger and for some reason we all feel the need to protect ourselves more. And because so many people hold their individuality at a higher importance over the good of the community, fewer are willing to step outside of their comfort zone to lend a helping hand. It's easier to sit behind a computer and click to donate to a charitable cause on the other side of the world than it is to reach out to the beggar on the street and understand why he's there. Sad but true.
