  • What about headsets?

    This is a tough issue for me personally because I do a lot of driving over long distances and can't afford to be out of contact all day. At the same time, I know first-hand that driving while talking -- even on a headset -- is dangerous. I suppose I could pull over for every call, but that would seriously suck. What to do...

    Texting while driving, on the other hand, should clearly be banned.

  • Farhad Manjoo viewpoint has just hit only the tip of the iceberg on this issue. In Washington DC is is illegal to drive while holding a cel phone. What is even worse than a driver holding a cel phone is a driver texting or emailing.

  • What if you are on the 405? Traffic is slow already ... why not catch up with friends and work ?

    Maybe this is just an LA thing, but driving is when I get in most of my phone calls. Its not about 'fun' ... It's about using my time productively. If I am going to be sitting in a box for 1-1.5 hours ... why not make use of that time?

    And the research basically said you are less likely to move around slow cars ... well .. there is the answer ... slow people cause slow traffic!

  • yeah, i talk to the passengers in my "friendly taxi" and miss highway exits, and crash into other lanes, and drop my foot on accelerator, and not to mention cross the center yellow lines, looking into one of those 3ft x 3.5ft semi-grills.

    well, some of that's lack of consistent efforts. what's not to expect from a lazy, fat, 21 yr , boy! that's right,

    i and nearly 40% of my generation is slacking, it will kill us.

  • Using a cell-phone while driving was outlawed many years ago in Switzerland - breaking that law is very costly if you get caught. I am surprised that it is still tolerated anywhere.

  • forget about the phone - what about all the pollution and greenhouse gasses produced by the cars on US roads. For goodness sake - the people of the USA need to get their act together and get more cars off the roads. - car pool, take public transport or walk, that way you can talk on your phones all you like.

  • Unfortunately there are to many stupid people who can barely walk and talk much less drive and talk. It makes it harder for those who can achieve multitasking.

  • There is nothing to yack about on a cell phone that is worth risking anyone's life on the highway. I drive to work at 6 am in a small city in Oregon, and I always wonder what in the world people could be talking about at that hour. Just hang the god damn things up and call back when you get there!
