After the week of rioting and chaos in Kenya, an independent investigation into the results of the presidential election has been requested.

Amos Wako, a close ally of the Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki, has warned that Kenya is
"quickly degenerating into a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions".

He went onto say that the review of the voting is necessary and that "a proper tally of the valid certificates returned and confirmed should be undertaken immediately on a priority basis by an agreed and independent person or body."

Doubts over whether the review will be accepted by the Governemnt are high, after Kikabi
made no mention of the proposed action in his press conference yesterday. He also accused the opposition of encouraging the chaos by saying he is "deeply disturbed by the senseless violence instigated by some leaders."

It seems the situation in Kenya is still volatile, with planned protest marches for Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement been rescheduled for today after the rally he had planned for a park in central Nairobi yesterday was cancelled, due to police blockades of all roads into town.

    • Violence in Kenya continues as rival political parties dispute a recent election. With each side accusing the other of rigging elections how will Kenya move forward in a cohesive way?
