With the 2008 prediction lists already forseeing the decline of Facebook in response to all the bad press from the security issues and web-tracking, could its underdog rival Bebo step up to take its place?

According to computer experts from Which? magazine, who conducted an independent test of the 10 most popular social networking sites , Bebo's the best performer and has made excellent progress on enhancing security (beating Facebook, which received an overall score of 74 per cent compared to Bebo's 79 per cent.) and protecting their younger users from data theft and dodgy users. Other factors under the microscope included the ease of setting up and using the site and the range of features.

BACKGROUND -

What is Bebo?
It's a popular social networking website aimed chiefly at teenagers and a younger audience than its main rivals MySpace and Facebook.

How do I find it?
Just head over to bebo.com.

Is it worth it?
Profiles are personalisable, like MySpace, so the chances are you'll have a migrane after a couple of minutes of browsing and it's not an Open Media Platform which some have suggested will limit its growth potential compared to Facebook. Then again, look how quickly Facebook grew in popularity and MySpace fell out of favour - anything can happen in such a rapidly developing, fickle market.

An 'I hate Bebo' page on Bebo!

His views are slightly controversial to say the least...

Richjm! ..let's not forget to mention; to have a Bebo profile you must be the proud owner of Burberry Kit aplenty.. innit.

I saw a program on the tv about facebook and the creator basically said it was advertisement funded and their plan was to basically gain as much info from peoples profiles as possibe then act as a third party for advertisers givin them a direct hit to who they were targeting. Myself personally have not got a profile on facebook but i do have a bebo and myspace. i think things like this are just great spy tools for anyone who has access to them. there was a case where a uni actually used evidence from facebook pictures to fine a student for breaking the campus rules. I also know of someone who posted a video of a rap on youtube which was taken in his stock room at work. The big cheeses find out about it and he was fired.
I supose we supply information to these sites so whatever you dont want them to know dont put up.

Any social networking where you post what you are doing (videos, text blog, pictures) can get you in trouble. Especially if you have your name. You just have to be smart about not PUBLICLY posting that you are BREAKING the LAW or RULES of an institution. I think I do understand people's motivations though. Everyone wants their friends to know how badass or funny they are. Just know that social networking sites are PUBLIC.

I know its public. they know its public. i guess they never thought anyone with serious intent would ever view it let alone use it in evidence against them. I supose part of you wants to think that your facebook is private but i dont see how you could ever think that seeings that whenever you comment on someones page its posted to everyone of ur friends walls. I personally haven't got an account on facebook and i'm not keen on getting one either.
